Federal prosecutors announced attempted murder charges against an Arizona inmate Friday, a week after ex-Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin was stabbed 22 times inside a library at the Tucson penitentiary where they are both inmates.

John Turscak, 52, is also facing multiple assault charges and inflicting serious bodily injury with an "improvised knife" around 12:30 p.m. on Black Friday a day the suspect allegedly told investigators he picked to symbolize the "Black Lives Matter" movement, which spurred months of protests around the country in connection with the death of George Floyd who Chauvin was convicted of killing.

Federal corrections officers intervened "immediately" according to court filings, dousing Turscak with pepper spray. He allegedly told the guards he would have killed Chauvin if guards hadn't reacted so fast. When he waived his Miranda rights, he allegedly told the FBI about the Black Friday symbolism and said he'd planned the attack for a month.

He claimed to have targeted Chauvin solely because he is a high-profile inmate something prison experts warned was likely to happen.

Turscak could see 60 years added to his federal sentence if he gets the maximum punishment on all of the charges he faces. He was due for release in 2026, according to the Bureau of Prisons.

Prison staff "isolated and contained" the incident before performing "life-saving measures" on Chauvin, who was treated at a hospital outside the prison.

In an appeal filed last month, Chauvin claimed new evidence shows he was not responsible for the death. Separately, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal for a new trial just days before the stabbing.

Not sure how this reaction would be considered fast. It takes a little time to stab someone 22 times, especially if they are fighting back at all.

They absolutely let this happen. I wouldn't be surprised if the DOJ supplied the shank. How do you stab someone 22 times if they actually responded quickly?

Yeah, one assailant? Those guards are not moving very fast.

That federal facility is not a maximum security one. Medium security. So not sure why that guywas assigned there? He must have had a buttload of years of good behavior to be sent there.

A former Mexican Mafia member who admitted carrying out a number of crimes while working as an undercover FBI informant was sentenced Monday in Los Angeles federal court to 30 years in prison.
John Turscak, 30, expressed bitter disappointment with his sentence. He told U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz, "I didn't commit those crimes for kicks. I did them because I had to if I wanted to stay alive. I told that to the [FBI] agents and they just said, 'Do what you have to do.' "
In 1997, Turscak became an informant in an investigation that resulted in the indictment of more than 40 alleged Mexican Mafia members and associates.

Midway through the probe, however, prosecutors dropped him as an informer after he admitted dealing drugs, extorting money and authorizing assaults while on the government payroll.

Turscak pleaded guilty to racketeering and conspiring to kill a rival in the prison-based gang. He could have received a maximum of life in prison.

In partial fairness to him, if Congress gets to do that (bolded), why doesn't he?

But seriously, it appears prison has been just a continuation of what he was doing before.

You can stab someone 22 times in 30 sec very easily. Especially when ambushing them, which likely happened here.

And even if you think he was guilty of murder or whatever, there has never been a single shred of evidence that race was in any way a motivation for his actions

Absolutely appalling that we have completely abandoned the idea that facts and evidence matters, and we have just ruined this man's life as a result

Since I followed this case soooo closely the irony here is that Chauvin pled guilty to the bogus federal crime because he and his counsel believed he would be safer in federal prison than a Minnesota state prison since he was a 19 year cop.

The only solace I take in any of what is happening to Chauvin in this.

In any blue city in America, at any given time, a democrat voter needs cops to show up and save their ass, secure their property, or just reign in the chaos..............I hope the two closest cops are sitting in their car watching something funny on their phones, eating cheetos, texting with the wives, and respond to the dispatcher that "yep, 10-4, <yawn>, right on that".

Cause you aholes voted for it.

Everything about this stinks and is dirty. a white hispanic who has served 27 of 30 years, who is in a medium security facility, decides it's so important to kill Chauvin that he's going to essentially live out his remaining days in prison? I don't buy it.
Timing is suspicious with the appeal and the documentary coming out as well.
I heard on Liz Collins podcast that 3 million people have watched the documentary now. That's not an insignificant number and is only going to get higher. People are being exposed to truths they never knew.

I guess the media can now label it a "mostly peaceful stabbing". Seems appropriate.
