Casinos bring trash. I prefer them out of state. Vegas is an easy flight.

People mindlessly assume gambling is some sort of panacea when, in fact, it is a long term state budget negative:Quote:
In the short-run, states indeed do raise additional revenues due to expansion of gambling activities and facilities. However, history shows that in the long-run the growth in state revenues from gambling activities slows or even reverses and declines. In short, the revenue returns deteriorateand often quickly. This pattern of deterioration may be due to competition with other states for a limited market (saturation), competition between different forms of gambling (substitution), or other factors. Despite the deterioration, the dynamic often continues, as states find new forms of gambling to authorize, open new facilities, and impose higher taxes on gambling. The results are short-run yields and longer-run deterioration.

If Texas were to implement gambling in pretty much any form, it would compete against Vegas, Oklahoma and Louisiana and, as market competition works, it is wholly unclear as to whether the resulting competition would actually generate enough meaningful revenue to offset the societal costs. Remember, the studies I'm quoting here don't even compute gambling in larger states such as Texas so if casinos were to pop up in, say, Houston, DFW, San Antonio, Austin (heaven forbid), El Paso, and on the coast in 2 or 3 places (or anywhere in Texas for that matter), that would force bordering states and even Vegas to adjust how they do business to keep Texas gamblers coming there. They're not going to say, "oh well," and waive the white flag.
Lower costs and house odds would lead to lower revenues and tax receipts, even over and above (or below, I should say) what the study I quote suggests.
THIS IS A BAD IDEA.

So you wouldn't want the private sector in Casinos to pay 20% of their profits to homeless education and infrastructure?
Sounds like a decent cause and reasonable for the riff-raff you probably let into our politics.
I'm in favor of using the taxes from legal casinos be used for something worthwhile, yes. Homeless "infrastructure" sounds like you want to pull an Austin and set up a tent city near the airport complete with porta potties and showers, lol, no thanks - way too dubious.
It's two separate issues. Gambling should be legalized, yes I 100% agree. Issue number two is how to appropriately tax and regulate it, of which I'm generally not in favor of, but in this case, something *hopefully* good and not pork.

I doubt this is a way to get casinos in Texas. The wife is a physician and not involved in the business. I don't think the kids are involved either.

I work in sports betting. I'd prefer if that at least gets legalized so I can come home.
Why? Just to stick it to OK and LA is a good reason.ttu_85 said:Why ? Its destroyed a lot of people. Besides there are legal ways in Texas to gamble. One of the best is a thing called the stock market and if you want to get really wild get an account where you can run shorts.#1 said:
Love being born and raised in Texas. It's the greatest state in the USA. But it's time to legalize gambling.
Casino gambling is dumb.
Exactly this.TresPuertas said:Falco said:

it's FAR beyond time for Texas to get with the program and legalize online sports betting.
Hopefully you get to get home soon!
That's my guess on where this is headed. Sports betting and in-game betting gets legalized first. Then casino gambling follows a few years later.Falco said:

Do you pay 20% of your income to homeless? Yeah,…didn't think so
Alcohol, tobacco and lottery destroy people as well, but they're alive and well in Texas. If you can't handle the responsibility, don't do it. That goes for drinking, gambling, etc. Legalize it and get out of the stone ages.ttu_85 said:Why ? Its destroyed a lot of people. Besides there are legal ways in Texas to gamble. Fun to gamble, but for every nice casino there are 4 nasty casinos.
Just remember, the house always wins. Casinos prey on their guests with the idea that they can win big with very little effort, but in reality, they are making millions off of the gullibility of society (and the promise of wealth without earning it).ttu_85 said:Why ? Bawahahah Wow, So nobody in the stone ages ever gambled ? How does legalizing an ancient vice move us out of the stone age? Goofy argument given humanity has ALWAYS gambled. Hell we have more semi conductor fab construction than any state-- Does that count more towards 'Getting out of the stone ages?"TexasAGGIEinAR said:Alcohol, tobacco and lottery destroy people as well, but they're alive and well in Texas. It's a form of entertainment. I'm currently in Orlando for a conference. Tons of people are here for Disney World/Universal Studios. That's another form of entertainment.
They're both expensive ways to throw away your money.
Let people have their enjoyment.
Not anything in the Bible about TexAgs and yet here you are...TheGreatEscape said:
There's nothing I can find in the Bible about gambling in casinos. I wouldn't waste my money like that. Some grandparents have gambled away the inheritance of their children. So it does make me pause and not see it as profitable or wise in spending money.
But if they are going to do it, then 20% goes to homeless infrastructure. Deal?
You realize that means they could lower the other taxes they collect, right? Like property taxes?TheGreatEscape said:
The state government doesn't need the money.

Look at how much property taxes went down when Texas adopted the lottery
