Always an interesting exercise to me as it was basically a time capsule of the Clinton years and you can see how the Dem perspective has shifted so drastically. Say what you will about the show but it was well written and acted and excellent TV, also gave a lot of insight at the time to the WH. That said it was Dem propaganda for the most part and tried to always show "Liberal Dems good, Conservative Reps bad" over and over with some notable exceptions.

Some of the interesting things though:

They openly court religious leaders and try not to offend Christian groups. Of course they make them all out to be extreme school marms but the types of conversations are fascinating. For instance they have an episode about how some gay guy was killed (based around Matthew Sheppard) and they are torn about how they won't let gays in the military. Gay marriage is beyond a no no.

Lots of emphasis on free speech and expression. The Rob Lowe character literally has a "Don't Tread on Me" flag in his office. They had a rant about how if we aren't careful they are going to try to regulate speech on the internet and tell people what they can say and of course it's the Republicans that are the bad guys.

Of course they try to make example after example of Republicans making assumptions about minorities and being evil and yet at the same time they treat Republicans like they are all Jerry Falwell wannabes much of the time.

It's an interesting time capsule for any political geek to watch and see just how much things have changed and of course just how hypocritical the Dems are. Essentially they got everything they wanted in the culture and yet people are more angry than ever talking about racism.

You also see how much Congress and the WH are now broken. We had actual political discussion and budgets back then and not Omnibus bills and constant theater.

Such a great show. Even if the politics bother you, the dialogue, movement, and acting was great.

I thought they did a decent job with Ainsely Hayes and Matthew Perry's characters to push back on the other staff member's views towards the GOP.

I'm as conservative as they come and I enjoyed the hell out of that show...mainly seasons 1-4. Once Sorkin left, the quality dropped and as they shifted towards the campaigns, it became increasingly partisan. The GOP nominee (Alan Alda) was a more leftist version of McCain. He was an atheist, pro-choice, big government republican. I couldn't stomach that part.

But seasons 1-4 is the best network quality television I've ever seen. Yes, they get preachy at times, but they get their shots in too at the left. Ainsley Hayes (republican smokeshow) calling out Sam about how they don't hate guns, they hate the people that like guns, was a great callout.

every time they lied to the public it was spun as ok, cause they really are good people trying to help. that was most hypocritical part about the series. But it was propaganda. See it's ok when liberal lies, its for your own good.

But it was good entertainment, well written, excellent cast.

Great show, regardless of the politics. Seems things are more like a knife fight now.

There's a really eye opening segment in season one (I think) where they are dealing with a Ruby Ridge type scenario. One character wants to act aggressively and others are calling for restraint.

The exchange goes something like this…(and keep in mind these are all dem characters):

Josh (?): I don't think it's a bad thing to be aggressive in preserving democracy.

Female character: Ultimately, it's not the nuts who are the greatest threat to democracy. As history has shown us over and over again, the greatest threat to democracy is the unbridled power of the state over its citizens. Which, by the way, that power is always unleashed in the name of preservation of the system.

Times have definitely changed for sure. Crazy how the spectrum has shifted.

Just watched that one again. BTW the prologue was they sent in a negotiator like the female character wanted and he was shot and so they had to raid the place anyway.

Agree. The interesting thing though to me now is how you see so many things that Dems were championing at the time or alternatively considering a "3rd Rail" issue and how much they have shifted. It's a great way to understand that to the Left most of it is window dressing for doing and saying anything for power and eventually trying to push socialism.

I enjoy looking back at politically focused movies from the past as well and seeing what they were saying and thinking at the time, it's very educational to understand larger context.

That's right. I'll have to go back and watch that again. Just interesting, as you and others have said, how big of a shift has taken place. Her position is basically the argument coming from the right today.

I'm no fan of Aaron Sorkin's politics, but in addition to West Wing, he also wrote the screenplays for A Few Good Men and Charlie Wilson's War.

The left was arguably the more staunch proponent of free speech for years, and that pendulum has swung way to the other side in the past two decades.

When I was a kid, Dems were, gasp, patriotic. Differences were more about policy and how to go about getting there.

The left now, or at least those driving the bus on the left, is about Marxist ideology and wholly remaking our society and culture by first tearing down the existing pillars of family, faith, and freedom.

It's not a bad show, but it's back when people weren't so so insane. But I think people in general today especially young people spend too much of their time on politics, letting it affect their every thought.

Outside of this board or when specifically talking about politics, it really shouldn't overtake a huge part of your life or make its presence known in daily activities.

Well, good news, it was then and still is still a fictional show, so you don't have to watch it.

Oh, he's always been. His character on the show is actually toned down from his actual life.

This is what I've always thought of the show. It had to be told from SOME sort of political perspective, else it would be too dry and too boring to watch.

That one actually started well but went off the rails. Especially the second season on some streaming platform.

That's kind of the point to me. It would be nice to get back to a place where we can have rational discussion and dialogue with critical thinking. That world seems so far away now.

During the aftermath of Bush v. Gore, NBC and MNSBC would have Martin Sheen on as someone they would ask what his thoughts were on the situation and how he would handle it, since he portrayed a President on that show.

As dumb as it gets...

I agree.

And I believe we're all guilty of it at times but when I was in my 20s, I remember some of the bigger things that happened in the news, politically and such, but I never paid much attention to it.

Some of these kids today are just immersed in a lot of this with a very Low understanding of the actual events. It's definitely the social media influence. Makes me kind of sad.

WW is my favorite show. What has always stuck with me is that the same topics they covered 25 years ago are still being argued over in pretty much the same way. It led me to the conclusion that government is mostly useless and designed to keep people on both sides in perpetual disagreement without any actual solution.
That being said, there is no modern show that will be made with such an even hand showing Rs and Ds.

WW and House of Cards were as accurate a portrayal as you will ever see of day to day life in DC. Sure they were embellished and fast paced to make them entertaining, but no other shows comes closer to reality. 24 was also good at capturing the tension between real intelligence gathering vs drawn out criminal/law enforcement procedure.
