SAN FRANCISCO - An "electric" shuttle bus operated by Google collided with multiple vehicles in San Francisco on Monday morning, sending one person to a hospital.

The crash happened near Castro and 20th streets at approximately 8:45 a.m., according to the San Francisco Police Department.

Multiple vehicles were damaged after the bus collided with them, police said.


A person inside one of the involved vehicles sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.

The crash was initially reported on Twitter by Xian Ke (@xianke).

I can't remember which city (Minneapolis?), but they had rolled out a fleet of these and then mothballed the whole fleet because they weren't powerful enough to get up hills.

I'm sure we paid for that.

This is a dilemma for the left. Castro street is 100% liberal.

This reminds me: why aren't all Amazon deliveries powered by EVs when they're hauling ass all over my neighborhood? Why are they trying to destroy the earth?

Too complicated. All the engineers are tied up to make the AI less racist

The specs say it has (6) disc brakes and since they already have air on the unit they should be spring applied, air released. If the bus went down a hill the compressor failed, the brake solenoids failed, or the brakes couldn't hold the bus on the incline with downward momentum.

Proterra did a lot of that system, that is the current secretary of energy's former company and they filed for bankruptcy earlier this year after they mismanaged getting millions from the government. I had a customer talk to them recently about their battery packs and they are full of smoke and mirrors. One of our customer bought their packs and had an issue, 6 months later they never heard back from their engineers.

Lots of engineers in this market understand what they are selling but not the applications

Thanks for your post. I made mine before I realized it was that size of bus. The brakes definitely should have worked, even if the compressor fails because they require air to stay released. It's a mechanical "fail close" system.

I guess it's back to the drawing board.

What has been buried in the story is the visceral hate that liberal San Franciscans (redundant?) have for these private buses. In their opinion they exist only to ferry salarymen to their wage slave jobs at tech giants, somehow showing how much better they are than the hoi polloi who have to use 'public transit'. To make matters worse they pay a pittance to stop at taxpayer funded bus stops obviously not providing their fair share to the common good.
