Remember anyone that says, "If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear."

They are lying.

Oh, and do make a point of apologizing to anyone who didn't want to give up their DNA to some faceless giant corporation for reasons that you, at the time, thought somewhat paranoid.

Quote:

Hackers have compiled a giant apparent list of people with Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry after taking that information from the genetic testing service 23andMe, which is now being shared on the internet.
A database that has been shared on dark web forums and viewed by NBC News has a list of 999,999 people who allegedly have used the service. It includes their first and last name, sex, and 23andMe's evaluation of where their ancestors came from. The database is titled "ashkenazi DNA Data of Celebrities," though most of the people on it aren't famous, and it appears to have been sorted to only include people with Ashkenazi heritage.

NBC News was able to verify the data of two 23andMe users in the breach as authentic.

"Crazy, this could be used by Nazis," one person who appears in the database said.

No. It WILL be used by Nazis.

Find the leaker and charge them as terrorist(s). There's really no other reason that data would have been singularly leaked.

The list could easily be used to target Jews and others mistakenly thought to be Jewish.

I put zero confidence in 23 and Me. They aren't giving their customers accurate info. There are plenty of stories of twins and triplets using the product and getting wildly different backgrounds.

And as a side note. My best friend and his mom both did the 23 thing. Apparently she is mostly French (but 100% Danish with good records going back generations) and her son is mostly not. Something doesn't add up.

We're not Jewish, obviously, but my mom gave her DNA over to them. I was none too please with her, and this is why.

My idiot brother did the same thing.

It's not just about whether you gave them your own DNA. You've got to hope that nobody in your family did it either.

One of her brother's did as well. Hopefully, since it is the same generation and parents, it's no biggie. As far as I know, only a long lost cousin on my father's side has done it, but that was because she was trying to find her father and his family. That's a long story.

Same here.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

23 and me is a giant scam. They have been busted falsifying data to people they thought were racist by telling them they had ancestry from Africa or Asia. But the real scam is that they charge you to collect your genetic info, and then turn around and sell that genetic info to the highest bidder.

Um, because there's been a major spike in antisemitism in the past few weeks?

Anti-semitism is based on race now? Or is it religion? I can't tell these days.

My mom was adopted and never knew who her real dad was. She got tested by 23me and found out she's 50% Jewish.

I'm leery of data collectors and listening devices but I have a DNA profile with 23 and me. I wouldn't have signed up for it myself but it was a birthday gift from my mom, so I caved and got profiled. I wasn't going to tell my mom thanks, but no thanks.

Results seemed accurate enough. Mostly English and Irish with some German and Eastern European. My great grandfather immigrated here from what is now the Czech Republic, and the rest of my family has been in the US a long time, most of them probably coming from Ireland and England.

So it got that right. I have family members that it detected and it correctly identified they were siblings or uncles or first cousins, etc... It's interesting and pairs well with genealogy research which is an interest of mine, but I still don't feel right about the privacy invasion.

I received a letter last week from 23&me stating that there had been a data breach and "DNA Relatives" data had been compromised and that my account was determined to be among them. They claimed another site was compromised and exposed ids and passwords which were then used to access 23&me data, but my password for 23&me was unique so that explanation doesn't work. I signed up years ago and this is the first such letter I remember ever getting from them.

Coincidentally I see this thread pop up and I wonder if there is a connection. It may not have been Jewish data that was leaked specifically, it may have been a general breach of data that was then used to compile a list of Jewish individuals. 23&me may have had a greater breach than they are admitting.

Just a general PSA, set up 2 factor authentication whenever possible and always use unique passwords for each account you have. Protect your personal information as much as you can, but assume it's already out there. Even if your data isn't hacked directly it may get leaked when someone else's account that's associated with you gets hacked.
