What has happened? Not very long ago it would cost around $50 for me to have my oil changed. Now about $125. Seemingly overnight. Is it simply that these places are now only offering synthetic oil brands? Or is something else at play?

I agree it's gotten out of hand. Combination of things, IMO.
- Price of synthetic oil and more exotic grades like 0w-20 required by many new cars that only comes in synthetic
- Oil capacity of many new cars/trucks is 7-8+ quarts, where ~4-5 was the norm 20 years ago
- General public's knowledge of cars and car maintenance in general is at an all time low. Most everyone I know falls into the trap of "need to take it to a professional" even for an oil change.

I can do an oil change in my driveway for around $60. Depending on which vehicle, can get two jugs of M1 or Rotella T6 + filter at Walmart for that price. Figure shop overhead and labor and there you are at $100+.
you can't change the oil on certain BMW yourself.akaggie05 said:

Where are you getting your oil changed? I used a auto repair shop and it's roughly $85 for synthetic.TheCurl84 said:

I'm not sure tbh. Someone said that it costs them $60 for Rotella and filter.

I can change the oil in my 6.7 F250 with 13 quarts of full synthetic Mobil 1 10W-30 and a filter for $80. If I want to change my fuel filters that's another $40.
The cheapest place to get oil is Walmart. It is $10 per jug cheaper there than at any auto parts store. The filters I order online from DOCs Filters. Walmart a lot of times has sales on their oils so you can get it even cheaper.
It takes me about 45min to change everything including the fuel filters. The last time I took my pickup in for the same service, it cost me $425 and I had to wait two hours. That's when I said never again.
Those who made minimum wage didnt work at oil changing places. But now that $15 is bottom, those techs who change your oil get $20.. You absorb that cost. couple that with Biden turning off the oil fields and you got $80 oil change.Burnsey said:
But hey, y'all effectively got the $15/hr minimum wage. Who gives a care if the price of everything doubled? Do your victory lap Dems. You earned it.

Ford dealer near me does oil change and tire rotation for around $120. 8 quarts semi synthetic, OEM filter, and tire rotation. Still seems worth it for now, we'll see how long it lasts. If it was only for an oil change I'd be doing it myself.
