What has happened? Not very long ago it would cost around $50 for me to have my oil changed. Now about $125. Seemingly overnight. Is it simply that these places are now only offering synthetic oil brands? Or is something else at play?

But hey, y'all effectively got the $15/hr minimum wage. Who gives a care if the price of everything doubled? Do your victory lap Dems. You earned it.

I agree it's gotten out of hand. Combination of things, IMO.
- Price of synthetic oil and more exotic grades like 0w-20 required by many new cars that only comes in synthetic
- Oil capacity of many new cars/trucks is 7-8+ quarts, where ~4-5 was the norm 20 years ago
- General public's knowledge of cars and car maintenance in general is at an all time low. Most everyone I know falls into the trap of "need to take it to a professional" even for an oil change.

I can do an oil change in my driveway for around $60. Depending on which vehicle, can get two jugs of M1 or Rotella T6 + filter at Walmart for that price. Figure shop overhead and labor and there you are at $100+.

I remember getting a 5 gallon jug of Castro GTX with a filter for $30 and Mobile 1 might be $40.

They say it's because it's synthetic but prices are going up more quickly now than any in my lifetime. A routine grocery trip that used to cost $60-$75 is now easily $120. My health insurance premiums went up $84 last year and now another $96 a month this year after having not gone up for years before this bidenflation.

Yes, a few base things that haven't inflated that much are disguising the degree of inflation in general. Particularly anything with labor priced in. I do my own oil changes, but have noticed that while the price of gasoline has increased some, the price of motor oil has increased 60-80% in the last 3 years.

Is this not the case? I got a 5 qt jug of full synthetic for $30 and a filter for like $10 a month ago.

I noticed that too. Inflation is stupid, and the cost of many services is getting unreasonable.

It'll cost you half that to just buy the oil & filter at any store, and 30 min or less of your time + trip time for the materials to do your own oil change. Unless you drive a ton though the savings will be minimal at the end of a year.
Anyone who chooses to ride a bicycle in the street is a threat to themselves, and others. If a vehicle strikes you accidentally, YOU are at fault; and the laws of physics supercede all else when you're in the path of a 2 ton killing machine. Know your place, stay off the road.

If you change your own like I do still at age 62. Cost a 1/3 of the price

It's not just for synthetic oil- if you have an oil change done with SAE30 conventional oil and generic filter they still charge $80-100. Semisynthetic is $100+. I've been in the process of moving and had to use commercial shops for oil changes but I'm about to go back to doing it myself. But even that's expensive for just the oil and filter. At my age, 73, it's not fun doing it myself but not terrible.

This is a good answer.

I still change my own oil. I have to use synthetic and it costs me $50-60 for oil and a filter. I dislike that cost until I see prices for a change at one of those places.

you can't change the oil on certain BMW yourself.

Where are you getting your oil changed? I used a auto repair shop and it's roughly $85 for synthetic.

My last full synthetic oil change was at Wal-Mart for about $60. I got there when they opened and was out in less than half an hour later. The dealer would've cost twice as much.

Bought 5 quarts of STP full synthetic and a STP filter for $35 at Autozone yesterday. BK Ford's "Works" (oil, filter, fluids, standard checks, and tire rotation) is $90ish.

I'm going back to changing my own.

Ford dealer near me does oil change and tire rotation for around $120. 8 quarts semi synthetic, OEM filter, and tire rotation. Still seems worth it for now, we'll see how long it lasts. If it was only for an oil change I'd be doing it myself.

I change my own oil for boat, wifes car, hot rods, and my Truck.

Get a 12 qt box of valvoline full syn for 58 bucks at walmart. Good for 2 oil changes on my truck. Motorcraft filter (good enough for a ford gt). So on average my oil changes are 36 bucks. So flip the system the bird, change you own oil. Takes 30 minutes to do, excuse to crack a beer.

You think oil changes are expensive, price a tansmission filter change.

I'm told inflation is running at only 4%.

They also told me the check's in the mail.

5 quart and 12 qt jugs are substantially cheaper then single qt. But on average a 5 qt of full syn depending on brand is 24-32 bucks at wally world.

I can change the oil in my 6.7 F250 with 13 quarts of full synthetic Mobil 1 10W-30 and a filter for $80. If I want to change my fuel filters that's another $40.

The cheapest place to get oil is Walmart. It is $10 per jug cheaper there than at any auto parts store. The filters I order online from DOCs Filters. Walmart a lot of times has sales on their oils so you can get it even cheaper.

It takes me about 45min to change everything including the fuel filters. The last time I took my pickup in for the same service, it cost me $425 and I had to wait two hours. That's when I said never again.

If you want to get super stingey on price, Kirkland oil is made by warren and specs better then M1. You can get 4 5qt jugs for 80 bucks.

Those who made minimum wage didnt work at oil changing places. But now that $15 is bottom, those techs who change your oil get $20.. You absorb that cost. couple that with Biden turning off the oil fields and you got $80 oil change.

LOL, those who now make 15 and think they are in high cotton, soon see 15 dollars doesnt go far. And they are ones who dont change oil in car to save money and blow it up.........poverty cycle continues.

The labor market for auto mechanics is incredibly tight which is compounding this problem. Obviously it doesn't take a top mechanic to do an oil change but those are effectively entry level positions and the guys that have experience are moving up faster and faster which is forcing higher wages onto the places that hire the entry level guys to change oil.

There are quality private label synthetics at place like Costco for around $3/quart.

Even using 7 quarts I'm under $30 and 20 minutes of my time for an oil change. And that's with a PITA under mount cartridge filter.

For future value purposes and record keeping, I do take my Boss 302 to the dealership for an oil change every year with the inspection. Nearly $200 last time. But ,geez, that 5.0 liter engine hold 7-8 quarts .
