From the Ukrainian perspective, it was the lesser of two evils. Stalin wanted them all dead or submissive to the communist party. The Nazis only wanted the Jewish and certain other minority groups dead and everyone else submissive to the Nazi occupation. Two bad deals with terrible dictators and governments and totalitarian states, but the Ukrainian experience under Russian communism was definitely worse for that group as a whole.

But yes, this is an easily avoidable circumstance with but a little research.

Anybody that knows an ounce of history knows what happened in Ukraine in WWII. And no, that sentiment has not been vanquished from the nation as it exists today. Yeah, those familiar with WWII history know that initially the Ukrainians saw the Germans as liberators. Stalin was a monster that treated them all as non-human objects to be used, abused or discarded at his slightest whim. The Germans actually saw some of the Ukrainians as fellow master race members (hence the Waffen SS units with Ukrainian members).

The lingering pretend-Nazi symbols you see worn by some troops in Ukraine today is really the Ukrainians way of saying FU to the Russians, as Nazis are still the biggest bogey-man in the minds of Russians.
