Both high schools continued playing well after the game was over but the home team quit when asked to by the police. For some reason, this guy kept his teenage band on the field after repeated requests to stop.

Now, the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

Is is possible for police to leave people alone and not escalate a situation into one where someone gets shot or tazed?

Not everything requires a police response.

There is something called officer discretion.

But I guess thats too much to ask in 2023.

The director refused to respect the officer's authority. So it became a charged situation.

So the officer has authority to tell a band to stop playing simply so they can expedite emptying of the stands and go home? If there was a true emergency in the moment I could understand, but this seems like a reach. Police have authority to protect the public but it's not without limits. I don't support fighting the police either, but man sometimes they force unnecessary harm to their public image, which can undermine the support they need during tough times.

I'm no lawyer, but having the band play too long after the game ends feels like more of a citation, than a tase the guy and arrest him type of thing.

Reminds me of that McClain case up near Denver.

Kid walking home and someone calls 911 on him because they said 'he looked sketchy.'

Cops roll up, put the kid in a headlock, call the EMTs

WHO INJECT THE KID WITH KETAMINE

Then the kid dies three days later.

Happened in 2019 but they just seated a jury in the case.

Not everything requires the police to show up and go full tilt, every time.

Police are saying he shoved one of the officers. I'm sure video will surface at some point -- high schoolers watching a situation unfold between police and a teacher? There's gotta be multiple videos.

I guarantee he wasn't tased and arrested, for having the band play too long.

Part of the issue is that every person is walking around with a cell phone people have been conditioned to call the cops for any reason, and in every situation.

In 2023, people love love love to call the cops.

Americans love the police more any place in the world.

Americans love police and they also love voluntary police encounters.

Everybody got their own personal problem solvers on speed dial.

In the ISD my wife works for there are always, as a matter of policy, an administrator (principals or AD's) at every after school event or at least present on the campus.

Unless there are details we are unaware of this seems like an employment issue not a law enforcement issue. Translated, principal or other administrator tells their subordinate the party's over, get your kids off the field. If the Band Director refuses to follow instruction, disciplinary action up to and including termination is the job of the ISD, no need for cops.

Again, unless there is other info we're missing.

This is another good reason to solid interaction with local police and the schools. The resource officer at my wife's school is Georgetown PD, but she is treated as a member of the school staff. First name basis with everyone. Multiple other cops as well.

I really have mixed feelings on school resource officers, granted much has changed in the forty years since I was in school. In the situation you describe, a good resource officer who knows the staff and students can diffuse a situation before it gets out of hand. However, it often seems their presence needlessly turns a run-on-the-mill school discipline situation into a criminal one. A fight that used to end with the principal breaking it up and handing out suspensions now results in arrest.

I see your point but unfortunately these are the times we live in and I don't see it changing. And at least from my experience, kids don't seem to "fight" like we did back in the day. Typically it's a bully that sucker punches are much smaller and weaker kid then curb stomps them - they deserve to be arrested. Most of the other time, it's an argument or trash talk (often on social media) that leads to a kid threatening to bring a gun to school, and sometimes they do. We need cops to deal with that sh**. School administrators are not equipped for it.

And if we're being honest, outside of the inner city schools with gang and drug violence, the real reason for the rise in on campus resource officers is to deter school shootings.

Again, who told black people that complying with a lawful command from a police officer was optional? They act surprised that they keep getting their asses kicked by cops after refusing to comply with lawful orders.

This bored is nuts sometimes. Is there a constitutional right to staying at the stadium as long as you like?

If your asked to leave the property, you do it.

If you want to resist the order of an officer, why would you be surprised when things escalate to them using force to carry out their duty?

There are times and places where that would work, but remember there were young female band members...do you really want to leave them in the dark?
