Georgia State Representative Mesha Mainor switched political parties over school voucher legislation on Tuesday. Mainor represents the west side of Atlanta, which is 90% Democratic. She is also a proponent of the police and did not support "defunding".

One of the reasons she switched is because in Atlanta, $1.5 billion dollars is spent on public education however, 97% of the kids in public schools cannot read and 98% failed in math.

She also stated that the Democratic party has drastically changed from pro education to a party of the status quo.

How can 97% of the kids not read? I'm calling bull**** on this stat. I'm sure the public schools there suck and it's dem policies and ****ty parenting to blame, but this seems like a "gotcha statistic."

Probably not able to read on grade level would be more accurate, I'm guessing.

I'm going to guess that it's 97% can't read on grade level, which seems absolutely feasible.

And quit nickpicking about the statistics. That's not what this thread is about. Celebrate that this woman sees the light and came over to the good side. We need more people like her.

I agree with the rock on this one. No reason to nitpick stats.

It would be great if everyone was honest/transparent, and did a solid study on why students aren't able to read at grade level, not at all, or whatever given how high the stat is.

I've got a 7 mo old, and we plan on homeschooling him at this point, when the time comes. I'll sacrifice whatever time I need to, to make sure he doesn't get fed the swill that public schools are pushing into kids minds.

Yeah, it is a cesspool. The kids are not the first, their parents and likely their grandparents sucked at reading and math. Not near enough emphasis on education I would bet. Hard to accomplish much when your raw materials are so much below standard.

But obviously she cares more about the kids and families than she does about adhering to democratic politicized garbage. hence her party switch.

Is this a different Rep. Mainor than the one that switched parties 4 or so months ago?
