Make no mistake, inflation, CAFE standards, and the endless regulations on cars are crushing middle and lower class folks trying to scrape by.

Or no one wanted a cheap car anymore.

Pretty sure most people have been signing up for $800 a month payments on 72 month notes for a long time now. If people were clamoring for cheap ass basic cars instead of King Ranch F150s, there would probably still be some options.

I didn't know they still made vehicles for under 25k. I can't imagine what you can get paying less than for an Accord.

I don't know how many but more than a few are paying more for two vehicles than they pay on their house payment.

There was a survey that dropped saying something like 70% of people earning 170k a year live pay check to pay check and worry about income.

I know people looking at buying a new Tahoe XL....for $80,000!!!

These are not rich, lots of disposable income people, but 72 months of payment makes it work.

And understand they're not towing a boat, or camper or anything. They just want "more space" than the Traverse they currently own for the family of 5.

When I point out they can get a top of the line Odyssey or Sienna for less, with just as much space, better gas mileage, lower insurance and taxes, the response is "NFW I'M DRIVING A MINIVAN!!!". I honestly don't get that stigma...it went away in about 1997.

Growing up I don't know anyone who bought a new car. All the middle class people I knew drove older used cars. Some were still a one car household, but that was ending quickly.

Middle class families in the 80s were middle class because they were frugal. And didn't live paycheck to paycheck buying new homes and vehicles on payments.

Thats not 70% of Americans, thats 70% of the employed under $170k.

The true number is probably close to 90% of total Americans.

I would bet only 1-in-10 Americans actually try and save money. The rest spend it faster than they make it.

It's funny for me becuase I look for the most basic of cars and it's hard to even find those anymore. Add in all the bull**** like mandatory reverse cameras, tire pressure monitors, auto emergency braking, and so on.

Do theses lead to less crashes? Debatable. I'm sure that's the argument but insurance isn't going down as a reflection of less crashes.

Simple cars are just harder to find now. The most basic models of today are almost as fancy as the top models of the past. Don't need them but have no choice.

Always a market for a cheap, reliable car.

BTW, whomever can tie into the "Rich Men North of Richmond" vote as well as the folks here is going to be hard to stop.

It has nothing to do with inflation. It has everything to do with the OEM's being smart and not flooding the market with a ton of supply like they did before COVID. They are making a ton of cash. They give zero ****s about you.

We had some friends purchase a $125k Escalade because they needed more space.

It has everything to do with inflation. An $18k car two years ago is over $20k today. Look at the inflation rate and do the arithmetic.

if they didn't last time, they will eventually, because socialist policies create inflation and higher taxes that impoverish people. Impoverished people vote for more socialism because they need the free handouts.

Where have you been? 84 month payments have been a thing since before COVID.

Banks are dumb enough to finance these cars.

OEM's are keeping the market tight because they are making a ton of money off of them, as are dealerships.

I tried your "math" and it does seem that vehicles were less expensive the further back in time you go.

Do you think that means vehicle prices when Bill was president were lower than when Trump was president?
