Liberal Environmental Policies Fueling Wildfires - In Hawaii?

There is a greater than %50 probability that poor forestry management and restrictions on control burning contributed to the disaster in Maui that has killed more than 35 people so far. Particularly given that Hawaii is one of the most entrenched blue states in the nation with the largest supermajority margins in their state house and senate. Why would they deviate from the schemes of virtuous hyper environmentalists who work to undermine or restrict control burning and land management that reduces the risk of wild fires?

We saw this thing happen in California recently.

The State wouldn't allow the trees to be trimmed/removed, they hit the power lines, starting a fire, and then blame the power company.

Wild fires are natural... People building houses in locations that may be prone to wild fires is unnatural.

Yep -- and then when the whole hilssides vegetation is completely burned -- landslides happen during the next monsoon.

Control burning would have created natural fire breaks, burnt only smaller and shallow rooted grasses, and preserved much of the living scrub bush and tree roots that help prevent landslides/mudslides in rainy times.

I think this is most likely true. Of course you'll never have the media or the Democrats admit it.

Regarding this specific case, we'll have to see though, I wouldn't even be surprised if someone started a fire. That's how a lot of this gets going.

The actual spark was almost certainly related to human activity in this case.

The kindling that allowed the fire to burn uncontrollably is typically poorly managed by liberals where they have power.

The wildfires that ravaged Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and east Tennessee a few years ago were in large part related to a lack of proper forestry management within the Smokey Mountain National Park itself. To be fair - they are doing a better job there now.....

Yep. These fires are a feature not a glitch.

Wish i could say i was shocked.
Leftists screw up everything.
Maybe some of these families who lost loved ones will start suing the specific authorities whose policies allowed this to happen

Which is why you need forest management

A large portion of the blame for this fire lies with pineapple plantations. Clearing rainforest to grow pineapples allowed non-native grasses to invade and build up fuel for wildfires. This is the result.

are you sure?

A lot of them were closed a long time ago and the big Dole Plantation is on Oahu, not Maui.

The west side of Maui, where the big fires are, was never a pineapple plantation that I fan find.

Where in this article does it mention anything about poor forest management or restrictions on controlled burning as a cause for the fires on Maui?
Sounds like winds from a passing hurricane and humidity changes led to the spread of wildfires.
But, if you feel the need to make this disaster political, go right ahead.
Geez….

Actually the power company is now ending their tree trimming because it cost them a lot of money. They say they can use AI instead to predict high risk areas.

And second, California is changing its tune and is now investing in more forest trimming to reduce wildfires. This is a big topic in California and people are getting behind increased forestry management. Not sure if they'll go for controlled burns because of emissions, but wild fire emissions are a lot worse.

Third, sometimes nature happens and humans aren't responsible. Yea we have huge egos and think we control the fate of all nature, but that's just narcissism.

I've ridden horses on that side of Maui up in the mountains, and can confirm large areas of cleared trees with delicious pineapples.

im glad they're changing their tune. They should have used common sense before the calamity happened, rather than learning the hard way. But better late than never, I guess.

California - definitely their fault. Hawaii? Has there EVER been controlled burns on any of those islands any time in the past? Or on other sizeable islands like in the Caribbean? Just asking, because I've never heard of that happening on islands.

I tend to doubt they had many controlled fires on Maui. Their fire departments were woefully undertrained and underequipped. They had a world class workout gym, though.

Yes it is a natural part of a forest's life cycle that is almost completely avoidable with controlled burns and logging old growth

Lawsuits are now flying at the power companies alleging that they failed to REACT to the fire.

And still, I have seen ZERO curiosity or reporting on the cause of the fire. Am I missing it somewhere, or is this beginning to have the same trademarks of narrative building and deflection that we've seen so many times before?

How did the fire start? Or, who started it? I'm beginning to believe that if they found evidence of arson - a la climate activists - then we would never be told about it. Indeed, they would likely say nothing at all....
