Go to 2:09:50 and watch for 3 minutes...

His basic premise is that joy will only be found as one makes progress towards a goal. It's not achievement that produces joy, but noted progress towards it. To maximize the experience of pleasure / joy, the achievement must be maximized to an ideal (even if practically unachievable)

As the modern leftist culture destroys ideals, it eliminates the precondition for joy to be achieved. I.e. in a culture where there is no beauty ideal or moral ideal, the precondition is then removed for anyone to achieve joy while seeking that ideal.

The whole series is exceptional, but I understand people don't have 8-16 hours to devote to it... this was a highlight I picked out.

The level of false assumption exhibited in some of these lectures highlights the disconnect between "experts" and real life. It's not limited to one group or the other, and it's notneven darkly amusing, because the sheep consume and regurgitate it...

*shrug* I think a lot of his premises are false, and he's another talking head. The OP highlighted a "fact" that's operating on an assumption that a certain group is miserable or unhappy.

It's like most of the "arguments" and "points" being posted lately....it uses a small, social media driven sample pool that's overly biased to confirm and criticisize based on desired outcomes.

They're miserable because society rejected them so they, in turn, are trying to change society and/or convinced everyone that it was actually they who rejected society.

If we were animals hanging out in trees, libs would have died off long ago.

Id also note that being joyful and happy are two different things. People who chase materialistic outward items to feel joyful will have difficulty finding it.

You do realize these conjectures are based off of research results and experimental results within the disciplines and a hell of a lot of reading and contemplating and experience. They aren't absolute certainties but they are soundly reasoned out and explained as plausible possibilities or interpretations that are at least consistent with experimentation and data.

It's not just a fanciful narrative of convenience, but I will agree there's room for critique and argument for alternative explanations. It's at least thought provoking and tends toward reasonable hypothesis.

I would argue that our country has boiled down to miserable leftists who see themselves as victims of every possible injustice. There is always someone else to blame for the failures. Never themselves.

The right is mostly made up of angry Trump worshipers who, if Christian, have devolved into legalistic, judgemental Pharasee types, who are exactly what the author of their faith fought against.

Our country has one path forward. Traditional conservative values. No Rhinos but no angry, narrow minded hate mongers. Shining city on a hill needs to come back.

The fact that liberals are more likely to be on antidepressants, more likely to commit suicide, and more likely to be need therapy disproves your point with facts pretty quickly.

Know how I know you didn't watch the video?

You do know he's a clinical psychiatrist for 30+ years and professor for as long (assuming overlapping times) and he specifically studied the mechanisms for positive emotions / joy and this was the finding from his study.

The Progressive movement at its core thrives on grievance. There HAS to be a victim and someone to fight for and there has to be a culprit for that grievance: at the present time the culprit is white straight conservative men. If they achieved their perfect utopia, they'd have to find or invent a victim class or the movement would wither and die.

Now go to Reddit and find 1,000,000x the joy.

ETA every major study indicates that conservatives are happier and more fulfilled in their lives.

Conservatives shape their world view to conform to reality. (This is a recipe for fulfilment and joy)

Leftists try to shape reality to conform to their world view. (This is a recipe for misery and bitterness)

Great point.

Conservatism generally supports the natural order. Straying from the natural order generally creates misery.

Liberals have and continue to do just about any whack job nutty thing they can to go against nature and the natural order of things.

Hence, misery.

He's kind of correct, meaning one has to do a hell of a lot of reading and listening to genuinely know your stuff. If applies to every topic, industry, and business, ESPECIALLY politics. I've been at it 40 years and in a sense, it's more difficult today than before 2010, or so.

The good thing about our side is if we don't get the information accurate or correct, we fail on the side of freedom or liberty. If the Left fails in their reading or message, which is mainly intentional, then folks often get hurt, killed, or at the very least, inconvenienced and the Left gives exactly two ****s about you.

Like the Portland teacher who got the **** beat out of her last week, the Left is incapable of being empathetic, and certain incapable of storing their emotions.

Now, having said that, and your class appearing to be 2008, there's vast amounts of wisdom you've yet to learn, although I'm certain it's not seen that way. Being 35 years old, or less, doesn't come with the wisdom of ages But, feeling like that makes for a great day, until life slaps they crap outta your head 3 or 4 times. Never fails.
Hate is how progressives sustain themselves. Without hate, introspection begins to slip into the progressive's consciousness, threatening the progressive with the truth: that their ideas and opinions are illogical, hypocritical, dangerous, and asinine.
This is backed by data.
