Tuesday after work I stopped at my neighborhood bar and a guy sat nearby that was talking about the peaceful protest that he called an insurrection. He went off on threat to democracy, the constitution, etc. I asked him if he knew what the framers and the signers of the declaration of independence were. He shrugged so I said - insurrectionists.

I guess he didn't know we are a republic not a democracy, either.

Personal story time. Junior high government class, up north. Early 70s. Now I confess that I don't remember the precise prizefight but I did watch it. It was a judge decision, not a KO. But a question on a government test asked about that fight and the result as being an example of which form of government? My answer was "republic with representative democracy." He marked it as wrong because he believed the answer was "dictatorship."

I talked (well argued) with him after class about the differences between having one person calling the fight and a vote between the designated judges as agreed to by both fighters and the association voting to come to a decision. Which form of government was closer to that situation? I won.

Now the reason I tell this is to make clear that kids really did used to be taught civics but are no longer. And that is how we lose what used to be the common bind of being an Ameican.

I wonder if you can hear the water sloshing around inside that Mongoloid's noggin.

I really wanted to see the faces of the others around that table and how fast they cut to commercial
