TPP takes down 'Vote White' slogan

The Taiwan People's Party (TPP) on Monday altered its Web site following controversy over its English-language slogan "Vote White, Vote Right."

The podcast Bailingguo News (News) on Sunday shared a screenshot on Facebook of the TPP site's English-language homepage featuring a banner with the slogan.

Although the color was intended to refer to the party, commenters were quick to point out that the phrase could easily be misunderstood by English speakers as advocating white nationalism and far right-wing politics.
I would wager most US English speakers would not know where Taiwan was on a map so keep your slogan.

Quote:

"It's OK if the TPP's English isn't very good, and it's their business if they want to make jokes, but to so perfectly imply and endorse white supremacy in just two phrases is to bury Taiwan's international image along with it," she wrote.

As of Monday morning, the banner image with the slogan had been taken down from the TPP site.
They are so polite.
I hate they will become slaves for the ChiComs one day.

We're the only country that interprets it as "white nationalism" because that's how woke we've become in the last three years under this administration.

We went literally from the strongest nation in the world to a third world sissy country in under a very weak and corrupt POTUS.

Very wussy of them. If they wont stand against this, how are they possibly going to stand against 1 million CCP soldiers landing on their shores?

Good luck.....

So, a non caucasian nation has a major political party that chose white to be its color (not race), and because American pop culture is so dominant, our stupid domestic intersectionalist woke political correctness is interfering with politics on the other side of the planet?

It's been much longer than 3 years. It's been going on for about half a century in academia, and really hit mainstream starting with Obama

Ten years ago, Ferrero introduced a new brand of white chocolate candy in Germany. The TV ad announcing the launch decided to portray the new product as if it were a presidential candidate holding a campaign rally. And proudly unfurled a banner saying Germany Votes White. Unsurprisingly, people got offended.

To the intended audience, people who live in Taiwan and vote in Taiwanese elections, it's totally obvious that the slogan is referring to a political party, and not to a race. It's the equivalent of "vote red" here in the USA: We know it means "Vote Republican", not "Vote for a Native American". A country shouldn't have to change its terminology just because idiots on the other side of the world misunderstand it.

I never got the "yellow" thing... they're way whiter than I am, and they are a pretty homogeneous society, so I don't see them really offending anyone inside their own country with that.

You don't have to.
You are not doing PR for a political party either.

I remember studying stuff like this in my International Relations classes. My favorite was a Gerber slogan from years past that basically amounted to "eat baby food", but translated in French meant something akin to "eat babies". The product didn't sell, lol.

All references to whiteness conjure images of white supremacy because we won't allow it to be associated with anything else.

Isn't cultural imperialism supposed to be a bad thing, that we are not supposed to impose our values on other nations and peoples? Or is it just "white people" values that shouldn't be advocated?
Example # eleventy billion why the left is irredeemably hypocritical.

The same people criticizing this slogan are the ones who would tell you the South African "Kill the Boer, Kill the farmer" song is just fine.

3. Coors: "Turn it Loose" translated to "Suffer from diarrhea."

American beer maker Coors discovered that slang doesn't always translate well. When bringing its cool "Turn It Loose" campaign to Spain, it appears executives forgot to ensure the translation would resonate with consumers. When translated into Spanish, the tagline used an expression that's commonly interpreted as "Suffer from diarrhea." While the campaign did make its mark on Spanish shoppers, it was for all the wrong reasons.
