So, I was off today from my main job that I usually work 7 days a week, 10-12 hrs a day. I have been there 6 months and have been promoted twice and start a new position in the morning. I'm also starting a couple businesses with an old boss, now friend, taking up a few more hours, daily. So 15-17 hrs a day, every day, usually.

I'm 52. I still get **** done for my 4 yr old son, etc.

Soooooo...tonight I worked a few hours for the startups and then went to HEB to grab a few things. At checkout, I get a 18-20 yr old looking young man. Doing the usual "How you doing?" chat as he rings up my stuff, he starts complaining about coming in at 1430 and "having to work to" 2230. 8 hrs. And he was off yesterday and wont work again until Tuesday, for another 8 hours. He then ended the conversation and hoped he could win the lottery...and I quote...."so I don't have to work so much".

When did our youth become such poosified wimps?

That's fine. I was taught to come early and stay late. I like it when my coworkers leave on time or early....

I will enjoy my promotion.

I thought we were moving away from working ourselves to death culture. One extreme does not cancel out another. Both are apt for harsh judgement IMO.

Nothing wrong with hard work of course but your method is not worthy of emulating either. I hope you figure out a healthy balance my friend. For yours, and your family's, sake.

But I'm trying to make sure my son gets into a private Christian School this next month. I'd rather work this much and start businesses that will allow me to eventually pull back a ton on the hours worked than have to murder some wokeass at a public school trying to groom my son.

I totally get what you're trying to say but I can't help but feel like I'd re-examine things if I'm working 15 hours a day, 7 days a week at 52 years old.

OP scares off most people today. They are afraid to meet a winner. My hats off to you sir. You work for it don't sit around waiting for it to be given. That scares 90% of our country now. Why we are soon to be 5-6 best country. Kids of today are so entitled and lazy it isn't funny. Schools are teaching them to fight for 32 hour work weeks. All used the term work life balance. Then they don't do **** to make life better. People will get mad here but many need to starve for a month or so like the depression era and get a real look at life. Too many fattys now day.

I work 12s, and have for the last 14 years. You aren't working 7 days a week pulling 12-15hr days and "still getting plenty done" for a 4yo. You night think so, but it's not reality. Lost my dad at 11 years old..... slow down and be there for the family because I promise you, the memories I have of running trotlines and robbing an old wild been hive mean a lot more to the one you'll leave behind than the money that may or may not be there.

Honestly, this "slave to the job" mentality is what destroyed Japan's family and social systems( and is why their population has fallen off so badly) its also why so many people under 40 are refusing to have kids.... we've been yelled at all our lives that it's the only way to get ahead, yet we rarely get ahead... after a point you stop being willing to be the company man anymore.

You can also accuse me of being lazy all you want. I work 12hr shift work, overtime, volunteer time and have been a volunteer SAR diver/firefighter in the past.

70+ hours a week is a lot easier when the work is YOUR businesses. You are your own boss the outcome relies on you, and the reward is way bigger.

If you were bagging groceries instead, I'm certain you wouldn't be eager to do it 70-80 hours a week fr minimum wage.

Interested to know if OP is talking about specifically kids/youth 20 and under or just "young" ppl in general. I have many thoughts but some posters refer to Millenials as "young" people still. Diff convo than 16-20 yo today.

I'll weigh in as a 25 year old who identifies more with the younger buck in this story than the workaholic...

The economy is trashed. We can thank Trump/Biden's COVID spending for initiating that downward trend and the current administration's efforts in keeping it that way. It's incredibly demoralizing for most of my generation. The fact that we can go out, get a decent job, start setting aside a little bit to retire, live with roommates, not buy starbucks every day, only buy a new phone every 6 years, eat out once or twice a week for social reasons, not drink alcohol AND STILL aren't able to afford a house til our mid 30s makes it really hard to even want to wake up and try. You can do it all right, all that I just said and graduate debt free and be given a 10 year old car by your parents, but you still might not be able to afford a house until you're nearly 40. That same idea applies to how we view our jobs: We can either grind and never get to properly enjoy ourselves and spend the money, or we can work a simple job and learn to be content enough with it.

Sure, we could go out and grind super hard for the money, but then we would be missing our lives. And unless you're spending at least a couple hours every day with your kid, you are the one whose priorities are wack. I was, and still am, far more content to work my 8 hours a day, never be rich, spend plenty of time with my wife, and invest several hours into my church.

I can promise you that when you're 35 you're going to wish you had grinded a little harder when you were 25.

And then you'll wish it twice as much when you're 45.

You have A LOT of life to live, friend. Grinding when your young makes the rest much more enjoyable.

A. You were talking to a grocery store clerk. He probably isn't the pinnacle of success for the generation.

B. I'd rather be paid for value than time. There's correlation, for sure, but the two are distinct

C. Can't get time back. Each man can choose his priorities, but both ends of the spectrum become extreme and (for most people) unhealthy

Many such schools have financial aid that cuts tuition sometimes as much as 50%. Trust me…been there and don't assume you make too much. But I agree, you work too much. I'm sure you are a great dad but you will look back and wish you had more time with your kids esp at that age….trust me on that one too.

I'm sure that's true, and my wife and I are talking, figuring out a small side hustle we can both work on in the future, some form of tutoring business for math and science is probably our best bet since we're both engineers.

For now though, we just bought a house and have a few hundred hours worth of renovations we are working on DIYing to increase it's value for when we sell it. New floors, remodeled bathrooms, updated kitchens, paint, new siding on the outside, etc..

Grind for what exactly? A nicer home, a fancier car, a more remote island vacation? A person can live very comfortably if he isn't dropping 10k on vacation driving a car that is <$30k and not paying 5k a year on club sports for his kids.

It sounds like he and his wife have their priority list right. God then each other.

Sorry dude, you have a 4 year old and are 52? Ouch.

I worked 70-80 hours a week until I had kids, no more. I would rather spend as much time with them than work myself up the corporate ladder. I worked my butt off early in my career so I was able to put myself in a great position so I could more or less make my own hours and enough to support my family

From someone that didn't have a father figure in his life until I was 16, kids need dads in their life. Showing them a hard work ethic is one thing, not being there for them is another. If you work 17 hours a day you are either spending all day working and sleeping or digging yourself an early grave.
