Yeah these mega districts are terrible for communities. We left Conroe for private school not because of the curriculum, but lack of discipline and control - I'm all for parents having a voice and ensuring our districts aren't littered with woke propaganda, but some of these schools cater so pathetically to every parent at the detriment of other kids. The number of accommodations allowed is incredibly stupid. You can't effectively manage 70 campuses and 80k students effectively. It's absolutely absurd. And what's sad is Conroe ISD is small compared to other districts.

I work for a technology reseller now and K12 is exclusively my customer.

One of the products I sell is a classroom management based out of UK. One of my peers here in the US went over to help deploy a new product and said that each campus is locally run (I.e. Conroe HS is it's own entity and has no control over Conroe MS or Conroe Elementary.)

He said it even for some of the bigger schools around London it was so much easier to deal with due to local control and less bureaucracy.

From somebody who deals the business side of a lot of schools your kids are in, there's a lot of people out there that care about your kids and want to do the right thing by your tax dollars and there are a lot that view you as a cash cow to line their friends' pockets and move up in the world. There are some that genuinely view you as the enemy and some that want to partner with you.

You couldn't pay me enough to teach in those "schools".
agree. The District needs to be split into 4 seperate districts and some schools need to be closed because of low enrollment. HISD has been very top heavy for a long time. surrounding districts are getting the same way.
Administration buildings are overflowing at Katy, Cy- Fair, Ft. Bend, etc.

Correct. I think the numbers across the nation are something like student populations up 7%, teaching positions up 5-6%, and admin positions up 87% over the last decade. It's nuts. Money grab.

The local district where my wife teaches, we just passed either 2 or 3 out of 5 bond proposals. I voted against all 5, but sadly, 2 or 3 passed -- I can't remember. Anyway, one of which, and it was probably needed, was to tear down an older building that housed some admin and the bus barn. The busses, I'm told, are staying, but the admin (who probably shouldn't have been there in the first place) are being moved to various school campi. One is the one my wife is based at. The principal is running around moving classes OUT of these classrooms to make way for admin!

I go to church with a board member and will be telling her tomorrow. The mission of the ISD is something 'for the kids,' supposed. For the kids my ass.
A few years ago our district had a bond proposal, and some of what was in it was needed, some was not. One thing in the breakdown was $200,000 for a ticket booth at the football field, something that would be used around 10 times a year. Then a huge amount for changing doorknobs and for painting inside the buildings on two campuses. We defeated it the first time. They tried a second time and we defeated it again. I told them the kids in shop and ag could build a decent ticket booth and that I could round up enough folks through service organizations and men's/women's groups at various churches to change the door knobs and do the painting, but it fell on deaf ears and we defeated it a third time.

HiSD is just like the city of Houston. Being run by liberal democrats and it will struggle. If it were not for the energy industry and IT they would really hurt. I know it well. This is what happens when good intended people ignore what is happening and do not vote or get involved.

No one with any means is sending their kids to HISD.

Just shows you how much real inflation is, because the purchasing power of teachers certainly didn't increase during this period.

If they are making 2x what they were a few years ago, the value of the dollar was cut in half.

I've never believed the way inflation was reported. So remember that when you are looking at your 401k tied to S&P and it "tripled" since 2013. It really only increased in purchasing power by 50%, which is a pretty crappy return for 10 years.

I love the way everyone piles on HISD and saying that it's democrat run. The state of Texas took over in June and Abbott picked the new superintendent. The new superintendent picked out four poorly performing high schools and the feeder schools. He made everyone at those schools reapply for their job. Those are the schools paying more for teachers. They also have a separate discipline group at those schools. If a student is being disruptive teacher sends a text and they take care of the disruptor. No longer the teacher's responsibility.

They will pick another group of schools and work their way through the whole system. Weak teachers will be moved to other positions or out. The admin clean up is probably due more to the fact that they have way to many bureaucrats and they need to get leaner.

It has been run by Democrats for years. Texas taking over won't help. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

That article is good news as far as I'm concerned. 20%+ cut in admin positions is a good thing.

And changing everything to pay for performance. I think that guy was superintendent in DISD?

At least they are trying in the right direction.
