I was at 0% loan debt within 5 years after 8 years in school. I also lived like a hobo for those 8 years, only took out what I needed, and then continued living like a hobo for a number of years even when my income tripled to upper class level. It's honestly not difficult to live within your means, and prioritize spending to eliminate debt first before buying "stuff" no one really needs. Most of my excess spending actually involved dating, as women tend to not go for the cereal and sandwich lifestyle, go figure. But negative net worth to 3-4 million in 15 years. And definitely not with a liberal arts degree. Of course, within 3 years I had started a business and was kicking ass financially, took massive risks, and was smart about those chances, mostly on myself. Can't do that with a liberal arts degree, so yes, it's primarily about choices in degrees, but also no ambition, expecting everything to be handed to them, and plain being adverse to working hard to get further (because that's hard), which sometimes doesn't happen quickly. Yes, life is hard. But paying off debts shouldn't be an assumed obstacle. Just don't be an idiot. And don't be lazy, and don't be entitled.
