To be fair, BMI doesn't work for a lot of people, white or otherwise. When doing my physical testing for the Navy, I always tested overweight (BMI 31), despite the fact I was about 8% body fat at the time. I'd have to go to the fatty line and take my shirt off and do all the measurement stuff. I always got a good laugh from the reactions of the medical personnel doing the fat people stuff when I got in that line.
Similarly, our company used to have a health screening and it was kind of awkward when I was 6'3" 230, muscular and in the best shape of my life, and the poor unhealthy looking moderately overweight technician had to tell me that I was "overweight" and could do xxxx to help mitigate that.
