I hope he is one of the first in line to pay reparations....
A couple of years ago, I received an email from a guy who was doing some genealogical research for his family. Some of his living family members shared some DNA markers with ancestors in my family tree, and he couldn't figure out where the link was coming from. Turned out that his great-great-great-grandmother (a beloved matriarch revered by his family) had been a slave in the household next door to my great-great-great-grandfather, and his great-great-grandfather was the result. Even more curious, she was moved with the household to Mississippi, and my great-great-great grandfather moved his family to Mississippi to be right next door to her again. I never heard from the guy again after his living family realized what that really meant.Definitely Not A Cop said:

Focusing on either over how you choose to live your life is pretty dumb.

If you look at just the Brazos County (1859) you can count about 60 "slave plantations". This is just for one rural Texas county in 1859.SantaLucia said:

"The 1860 census shows that in the states that would soon secede from the Union, an average of more than 32 percent of white families owned enslaved people. Some states had far more slave owners (46 percent of families in South Carolina, 49 percent in Mississippi) while some had far fewer (20 percent of families in Arkansas)." - https://www.history.com/news/5-myths-about-slavery

Hmmmm, 32%?
I always thought you had to be fairly wealthy to own a slave. Most people back then were not. Certainly not 30% of Americans.
How trustworthy is that report?
I never realized how much the map of Brazos County looks like Iraq.doubledog said:If you look at just the Brazos County (1859) you can count about 60 "slave plantations". This is just for one rural Texas county in 1859.SantaLucia said:

Just think about the global warming future and all those unfortunate children who will be able to trace their heritage back to an SUV owner.Ag with kids said:This is stretching and conflating numbers...Logos Stick said:SantaLucia said:There were a lot of slave owners. It's basically like this:
Mom and Dad own an SUV. They have 4 kids, all under the age of 10. Because they're in their family, they ALSO own the SUV.
So, now, we have 6 SUV owners.
BOOM!!! Percentage of SUV owners has tripled...

It's an identity. Therefore capitalized.
Ever seen anybody refer to mexican Americans? christians, muslims, jews
If you want to breakout chapter and verse of the Chicago Manual of Style, or the MLA Formatting and Style Guide, I'll listen.
Looks like they're taking a page from Pride Month and going both ways...Quote:
AP's style is now to capitalize Black in a racial, ethnic or cultural sense, conveying an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among people who identify as Black, including those in the African diaspora and within Africa. The lowercase black is a color, not a person. AP style will continue to lowercase the term white in racial, ethnic and cultural senses.
