Make the bars and bartenders pay as well. Bars in Houston and surrounding areas are notorious for over serving drinks to patrons.

How can someone that should be in prison for the rest of their life pay child support?

I'm surprised that the auto manufacturers haven't developed a technology yet that requires the driver to blow and go. If they can develop self-driving cars, why not test the blood alcohol level of the driver.

They already pay a lot more than child support in the resulting dram shop civil suit.

Will that hold up in the courts? What about those killed that are not parents? What if they were primary care givers?

It's already been made law inside the Infrastructure Bill. You will have to blow every time you get in your car. Welcome to 1984.

These always seem like virtue signaling laws that create other issues. Something seems wrong when criminal laws have penalties that differ by the type of citizen impacted (parent, grandma, kid, vet, etc.).

Didn't Biden pass a law that kicks in in a few years that requires this sort of device in all cars?

We've had this for years. Standard condition of bond and then probation in felony DWI cases.

I think we both know they can. We also know that too many politicians are raging alcoholics that will never allow such a law to be passed

The technology has existed for years. Problem is auto manufacturers don't want to lose customers or take legal liability for personal choice.

Volvo has snitch-tech but it's obviously not popular: https://m.slashdot.org/story/353536

Well, auto manufacturers won't have any choice since it is now US law that they will do this.

The caregivers for kids who lose their parents to drunk drivers can sue in civil court, but good luck ever collecting. Child support is A LOT harder to avoid, and if you avoid paying it long enough you can get arrested. All this does is remove some of the barriers to accountability.

It's called an interlock, and they can be court mandated in a DL

No. Evidently only drunk driving matters. Just killing someone for the $200 in their purse is no biggie.

Texas could pass a law increasing the maximum penalty for intoxication manslaughter from twenty years to 99 years or life (same as non-capital murder), but the death penalty would be unconstitutional for manslaughter.

Agreed. The same crime shouldn't be punished differently because of who the victim is.
