Thousands are living in RVs on Los Angeles' streets. Leaders want to shrink the number, but the solution is elusive

There are, by the latest count more than 11,000 people living in RVs across Los Angeles County. And that number has been rising. The Covid-19 pandemic forced more people into poverty. Some of the RV dwellers have jobs but either don't want to pay apartment rent, or can't afford to pay it, in a city where the average one-bedroom apartment costs around $2,500 a month.

There are so many places in CA that are a lot nicer than LA, if I am living in house that is mobile I am definitely not living in LA. My son always says when he see the guys cleaning out the port o potties on the beach at Port A, if he ever has to clean up **** for a living he's doing it on a beach.

Thanks for sharing. That article was hilarious. And I learned a new term - "vanlord".

Frankly, I think the estimate of 11,000 is low.

There are YT channels of families living in RVs and converted vans and they make 5-6 figures a month documenting their life, their adventures, and their homeschooling doing it.

Kinda fascinating

Kara and Nate live in their van and travel the world documenting what they do.

This is the family of nomads.
Five of them live in an RV and travel around the country

It's been going on for awhile. When I brokered RVs from '19-21 Cali investors would buy shuttle vans in Texas cuz they were dirt cheap, like under 15k. We had plenty of pics on the listing but they paid cash site unseen. Flew out a runner to drive it back to Cali then reno the shuttle as a small house and sell it for a huge profit.

There are definitely a lot of people doing the vannlife thing. If I could find a WFH position with medical, I'd grab starlink and build one in box truck just to go and do some.

I got interested in English narrowboats for a bit( if you've never seen them, watch a channel called "cruising the cut".... nice guy, and documented several years full time one a boat) out of shear curiosity, believe it or not London and some other water based cities have seen a HUGE uptick in them being used as full time homes as well.

I have a retired uncle that does this. He lives on the cheap in a van and travels the nation months at a time, just seeing stuff. Not RVing, but staying wherever is super cheap or free.

This drives me crazy. It was not the covid pandemic that forced people into poverty. It was the bull**** response to covid that forced people into poverty.

Aren't we all so excited that Californians are coming to Texas to vote for the same thing! Last go around all the Californians who have moved onto my street had their flood of Beto signs. I know it's just anecdotal but I've lived in Houston my entire life, and I've never seen as many homeless as I do now. I think we're importing them

Our RV parks are full of full timers. Most are nicer rigs and people choose to live this way. Some have become run down because that's all they can afford and the parks look like junk yards.
Down road from me, someone had their dad living in a nice RV. Now another has showed up. Don't know if folks in the house need rent money, or they are helping someone out. Doesn't take long to get over run.
Up at Lake o the pines , there is disabled vet who uses the VA hospital in Shreveport, I think he gets his place for free, he moves around the parks a lot, as I guess they do the 14 day max even on freebies and disabled vets.

There is a big difference between people with jobs that are nomadic living in mobile tiny homes & jobless people living in a broken down rv or camper parked full time on a city street

This is not just limited to California. Rv parks everywhere, including Texas, have tons of permanent residents in them.

I travel to SoCal a lot on business, I can assure you none of the RVs people are living in along the streets are the glamorous type many of you are talking about.

All of the suppliers I visit now have 24/7 security at their plants to protect them from the thousands of homeless people living along the streets.

Here is what the street looks like in front of one of our suppliers. Take a stroll up and down this road - there are thousands more like it all over SoCal.

This isn't the same as people just living in an RV in public.

I work at a highschool and we have to run the homeless off our stoops every morning. This has never been a thing until recently

Just block off an area in the city you want and declare it your own sovereign nation of Chaz - then park the RVs there problem solved. They even ran the police out of their station who happened to be in their nation.

Did anyone face any consequences for that ? Not a white supremacy narrative to exploit. Just imagine if reversed.

Now in this case in addition to all the RVs don't forget all the people who have resorted to living in boats they just parked in the bay.

San Francisco a beacon of liberalism and what all major cities aspire to become.

I saw this firsthand last summer. I was going to NASA JPL in Pasadena for work and they had the highway shut down for construction. The detour sent me through neighborhoods that would make you think you were in a Third World country. It was block after block of rundown RVs and trailers. I was driving and using my phone for navigation so I wasn't able to get any pictures. I pull these off the Internet. This is basically what I saw.

How is someone "forced into poverty"? Are they forced to sit on their couch all day instead of out working hard at a job to make money?

I watched some "documentary" on bum fights...... The most famous of the bums turned his life around and is seemingly successful. I remember going down to the bayou through Houston where bums "lived", influenced by the show. It was horrible. The underpass was littered with human shat piles and tp. Just horrible. At least "Bum Fights" exploited the weak properly. You'd think the democrats would want to bring this back.

Unless they are actually making money off it.

Most of them probably work at fast food and grocery stores and big box stores.

But people really choose the RV life. Especially if they have bad credit or an eviction.

Perhaps LA needs to establish an RV park for these families.
It isn't like they actually care to take care of the homeless

CM will be here shortly to tell us big blue cities are utopian progressive paradises and that it's just right wing propaganda to suggest they have very real and very self inflicted problems
