Because I no longer have children in school, I would like to donate my "school taxes" to the school of my choice.

Seems only right…

Yes!
Or how about "Why do I have to pay for YOUR kid?"

All they need now is Abbott's signature; it's a done deal.

*I commented further below apologizing for my quick and hotheaded comment above. The senate made changes so the House still needs to concur. It just feels inevitable given the pressure Abbott has put on them, but my comment was unfair and misleading when there is still at least one step to occur.

Can someone fill me in? How was this revived? I thought I read on here that rural republicans helped kill them?

Nope unfortunately you will get to pay for all the news needed for the millions of illegal aliens that have been let in the country.

Your taxes are going up too!

Looks like the Senate passed a more comprehensive bill that includes a voucher program:

Doesn't the house still have to pass it? Further up someone says it just needs Abbott's signature. Big deal in our household, so need to know if I should get excited or not. Haha.

HB100 was passed last night by the senate. However, amendments were made so the House has to concur. So, there is still a chance it will die.

I apologize for my comment. I jumped to a conclusion out of frustration and the pressure Abbott has put on them with this agenda. It was unfair to do so when there are still steps to occur.

No doubt. I have a kid in her final year of Private School (only 2 years) that I'd love to take advantage of....

Given that the session ends on Monday and the house hates the changes the senate made, I doubt it will pass the house with no changes.

Abbott could call a special session though.

He's threatened a special session over vouchers.

Well, Paxton expects me to pay for his settlement...So whats a little more of my money. I don't seem to have any control over it or the politicians who use it for their own whims. I'm also paying for healthcare for people who are not Christians and roads that I will never use. Its all a sham.

I gotta say, most of what is taught in government schools is simply propaganda and indoctrination nowadays. Why should we have to pay for that?

Several weeks ago I heard that if your kids are already in private school then you won't be able to get any vouchers. Not sure how accurate that is or if still true. Regardless, I have severely sacrificed to put my 4 kids in private school in large part to get them away from the rif-raf that these vouchers will open the doors to. So not a fan even if I would be less broke assuming I could qualify for any vouchers.

Sec. 29.355. ELIGIBLE CHILD. (a) A child is eligible to participate in the program and may, subject to available funding and the requirements of this subchapter, initially enroll in the program for the school year following the school year in which the child's application is submitted under Section 29.356 if the child:
(1) is eligible to:
(A) attend a public school under Section 25.001; or
(B) enroll in a public school's prekindergarten program under Section 29.153; and
(2) either:
(A) attended any public school in this state for at least 90 percent of the school year preceding the school year for which the child applies to enroll in the program; or
(B) is enrolling in prekindergarten or kindergarten for the first time, including a child who was homeschooled before enrollment.
(a-1) Notwithstanding Subsection (a) and subject to Section 29.356(b-1), a child is eligible to participate in the program if the child:
(1) meets the qualifications under Subsection (a)(1);
(2) attended private school on a full-time basis for the preceding school year; and
(3) is a member of a household with a total annual income that is at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.
(b) A child who establishes eligibility under this section may, subject to available funding and the requirements of this subchapter, participate in the program until the earliest of the following dates:
(1) the date on which the child graduates from high school;
(2) the date on which the child is no longer eligible to attend a public school under Section 25.001;
(3) the date on which the child enrolls in a public school, including an open-enrollment charter school, in a manner in which the child will be counted toward the school's average daily attendance for purposes of the allocation of funding under the foundation school program; or
(4) the date on which the child is declared ineligible for the program by the comptroller under this subchapter.
(c) Notwithstanding Subsection (a) or (b), a child is not eligible to participate in the program during the period in which the child's parent or legal guardian is a state representative or state senator.

So basically if you have kids in private school already you are SOL (unless you are extremely poor which probably only applies to private school recruits from the inner cities who get "scholarships" to play ball - that's why that is there). In my case I have 4 kids and won't get a penny even though I sacrifice to send my kids to private school. Now private schools will be flooded with applicants and raise tuition (supply and demand) forcing my kids out.

In case y'all missed it, Rep. Ken King posted this last night. You can look up his statement.

"HB 100 was my signature piece of legislation for the 88th Regular Legislative Session. I'm very sad to say that it ultimately did not pass!" Rep. Ken King

Well sadly even if you use the roads you still get to pay. If you drive anywhere now it seems a toll road is involved. $300 plus a month toll road expenses are not uncommon.

Rural Republicans being against them should not be too surprising. There aren't much in the way of private schools in rural areas, at least, not around here.
