Makes sense I guess. With the meteoric rise of young people identifying as alphabet people, which I don't buy the sincerity of mind you, I wondered how many would actually go through with participating in something they are not wired for. I guess you just claim non binary and don't.

Its when the binary angle, can no longer dangle, you get non-binary.

The short answer is mental illness. But basically they don't consider themselves to be male or female, I believe. So they're not one of the two "binary" choices.

I have my own conjecture about why this is the case.

Part of it is that being LGBT is more socially accepted that it was decades ago. This is obvious.

But the other side of the coin, which nobody talks about, is that unsuccessful heterosexuals are as uncool as ever.

For a Boomer, Gen Xer, or early Millennial, if you were an unlucky teenager without an opposite-sex partner, and someone assumed you were gay on that basis, you'd be really offended.

But a Gen Zer may feel compelled to respond "Yes, I am gay", as a way of saving face. Because social norms these days are such that it's better to have people think you're gay than to have people think you're unattractive. Obviously, this wasn't the case for earlier generations.
