Some of the plagiarism services like TurnItIn have started incorporating algorithms to detect if a paper was written by AI or not. About the only way to stop it is to make all essays written by hand or typed in a lab on lockdown browsers. It's probably not feasible at the college level, but periodic writing samples done to have a benchmark of a writing style can go a long way in making AI-written papers easier to detect.

I tutor high school and college English. Many, if not most, of the essays I see are terribly written. My least favorite part of the job is when a kid brings me an essay just to "look it over for grammar" and the whole thing needs a rewrite.

If an entire class submitted essays to me that actually looked like they were written by skilled adults, I'd be suspicious too.

I understand that the computer might make a mistake and think that it wrote a high-quality piece of writing like War and Peace or the sonnets of Shakespeare, but I doubt ChatGPT would claim to have authored an essay that was rife with errors.

I have some young engineering staff I am trying to mentor and supervise their work. My biggest problem is their atrocious writing skills. After thirty years in the profession the problem only seems to be getting worse as colleges push out new graduates
Having been an engineer for 30+ years, it's been my experience that MOST engineers suck and have sucked at English writing skills...

I'm curious - was the paper on 'rodeo' or another subject.

I'd be interested in reading a 'rodeo' essay.

Here you go, essay written by me, totally not plagiarized or written in Chat GTP.

His eyes are cold and restless
And His wounds have almost healed
And she'd give half of Texas
Just to change the way he feels
'Cause she knows his love's in Tulsa
And she knows he's gonna go
But it ain't no woman flesh and blood
It's that damned old rodeo

Well it's bulls and blood
It's dust and mud
It's the roar of a Sunday crowd
It's the white in his knuckles
The gold in his buckle
He'll win the next go 'round
It's boots and chaps
It's cowboy hats
It's spurs and latigo
It's the ropes and the reins
And the joy and the pain
And they call the thing rodeo

She does her best to hold him
When his love comes to call
But his need for it controls him
And her back's against the wall
And it's "So long girl, I'll see you."
When it's time for him to go
You know the woman wants her cowboy
Like he wants his rodeo

Well, it's bulls and blood
It's dust and mud
It's the roar of a Sunday crowd
It's the white in the knuckles
The gold in the buckle
He'll win the next go 'round
It's boots and chaps
It's cowboy hats
It's spurs and latigo
It's the ropes and the reins
And the joy and the pain
And they call the thing rodeo

It'll drive a cowboy crazy
It'll drive the man insane
And he'll sell off everything he owns
Just to pay to play her game
And a broken home and some broken bones
Is all he'll have to show
For all the years that he spent chasin'
This dream they call rodeo

Well, it's bulls and blood
It's dust and mud
It's the roar of a Sunday crowd
It's the white in them knuckles
The gold in the buckle
He'll win the next go 'round
It's boots and chaps
It's cowboy hats
It's spurs and latigo
It's the ropes and the reins
And the joy and the pain
And they call the thing rodeo
It's the broncs and the blood
It's the steers and the mud
And they call the thing rodeo
Actually, that's not bad. I almost feel like I'm watching an episode of "Yellowstone".

Someone should get this to Kevin Costner. Maybe he could get Garth Brooks to sing it.
They would need to contact Taylor Sheridan as Costner is apparently no longer involved with the show, or at least not for long.

Someone ran his dissertation paper through CHAT GPT and it mentioned how it easily had the markers for AI generation.

Which are things, wait for it, that make a good paper. Proper grammar, concise flow of coordinated thought, etc.

The prof was an idiot but it's just another outlier for the growing issue of unchecked and unregulated implementation of free use generative capabilities in our lives.

Education and the arts I figured would be the first to feel it and boy was I right. But it's going to change everything. One way or another. And if it doesn't affect something directly, it will affect adjacent things that have influence instead.

For courses with long papers, maybe you have kids come in and hand write their paper a little bit at a time. If that requires the cheaters to memorize big blocks of a paper, great.

No idea how teachers deal with this though. I think I would teach kids to use ChatGPT and then critique its output and work on fine-tuning their inputs.

There are already plagiarism checking services that A&M pays for. turnitin.com is a huge one.

I fed ChatGPT a yahoo article from 2016 and asked if the writing style looked like it came from ChatGPT. Here is the response:

Quote:

As an AI language model, I can provide some analysis, but I cannot definitively determine the authorship of a specific article. However, the writing style of the provided excerpt does resemble the style often generated by ChatGPT. It exhibits a factual and straightforward tone, providing details about the Yahoo security breaches. The language used is concise and informative, focusing on the essential information.

Well there you have it...
Factual/straightforward tone - check
Concise and informative - check

Must be ChatGPT then

Texas A&M Prof Flunks All His Students After ChatGPT Falsely Claims It Wrote Their Papers

A number of seniors at Texas A&M UniversityCommerce who already walked the stage at graduation this year have been temporarily denied their diplomas after a professor ineptly used AI software to assess their final assignments, the partner of a student in his class known as DearKick on Reddit claims to Rolling Stone.
Dr. Jared Mumm, a campus rodeo instructor who also teaches agricultural classes, sent an email on Monday to a group of students informing them that he had submitted grades for their last three essay assignments of the semester. Everyone would be receiving an "X" in the course, Mumm explained, because he had used "Chat GTP" (the OpenAI chatbot is actually called "ChatGPT") to test whether they'd used the software to write the papers and the bot claimed to have authored every single one.

Quote:

"I copy and paste your responses in [ChatGPT] and [it] will tell me if the program generated the content," he wrote, saying he had tested each paper twice. He offered the class a makeup assignment to avoid the failing grade which could otherwise, in theory, threaten their graduation status.

There's just one problem: ChatGPT doesn't work that way. The bot isn't made to detect material composed by AI or even material produced by itself and is known to sometimes emit damaging misinformation. With very little prodding, ChatGPT will even claim to have written passages from famous novels such as Crime and Punishment. Educators can choose among a wide variety of effective AI and plagiarism detection tools to assess whether students have completed assignments themselves, including Winston AI and Content at Scale; ChatGPT is not among them. And OpenAI's own tool for determining whether a text was written by a bot has been judged "not very accurate" by a digital marketing agency that recommends tech resources to businesses.

Commerce uses "TurnItIn" to check for cheating already. Using other programs is overkill.

Yes, but no one cares.
They see the title saying "Texas A&M" and go "bwahahhahahahah".
