Good news for Trump supporters on getting the GOP nomination

He and his supporters have increased the number of primaries that are winner-take-all (even without a majority of the vote) from 7 to 17 states. This dramatically increases his chances to get the nomination over Desantis and others. As long as he keeps his 35% base, easy to see how he will get the nomination even with a minority of the total votes.

So the candidate with the largest percentage of votes wins the state's primary?

Omg what a terrible & rigged situation

Perhaps, but I think a lot of conservatives want an alternative. I think Desantis has a broader appeal.

Desantis swam up river on COVID while Trump closed his mind and allowed Fauci and Birx to run the country into the ground. That single thing will go a long way in the minds of voters.

Good news for Trump supporters... and good news for Democrats.

Because if Trump wins the nomination, it's four more years of a Dem in the White House.

Possibly. Winner take all does happen until March so the field will be consolidated by then. If it's a two-man race by then...

This is why the OP is so happy and trolling about it. He knows his party wins if Trump is the nominee.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Your OP is misleading. These rules are the same ones in place since 2020. Nothing has changed for 2024, although the article says there's plenty of time for change. Candidates can petition the RNC by October 1 for something different than winner-take-all. It's not a fait accompli. It was done that way to protect an incumbent president when Trump was still in the WH, and the Dems often follow that approach too when they're in the WH.

And to your point about Trump's 35% base... if DeSantis gets the other 65%, then he's the winner-take-all, so not sure how this is a slam dunk for Trump. I'm not saying DeSantis will get 65% in a state... I'm just saying your OP is misleading and technically incorrect.

If the field is crowded... Trump benefits by his loyal base. But if it's down to him and DeSantis, trumps base won't be nearly enough.

Same problem Trump has in the general. He will get his supporters out in good numbers, but they aren't enough.

Of a lot is more than 36% then that candidate will win. There's 65% that he won't get by your math.

This take is ridiculous! If Desantis can't win the primary, why the hell would he or any other gop win the general?

Either Republicans can win or they can't. Winners win the primary.

So your quarrel shouldn't be with Trump supporters, but people who won't vote Republican if Trump is the nominee. THEY will be the ones at fault if Trump wins the nomination and loses the general.

Lol, the best candidate for the primary is not necessarily the best for the general. Sometimes they are the same. It's possible Trump's base will carry him to the R nomination, although it's too early to call that. But if he does win it, he ain't winning the general because he can't get 50%+ of the vote in enough states to take the electoral college.

Why else do you think Dems are itching for him to run again? Because they know he's damaged goods. Ray Charles can see that, lol.

Very few folks that don't vote for Trump and vote for someone else would vote Trump, that's the point. It gives Trump an advantage in a crowded field if multiple candidates stick around to suck up 10-15 percent of the vote that would likely go to DeSantis if they weren't there.

That said I think DeSantis is already planning on this and has a plan. I'll also say that this explains why Trump sold out the rest of us to get Ronna McDaniel another term as RNC Chair. We may not have a ground game or a legal team but damnit Trump got his favorable Primary rules and will likely get what he wants for debates and we know that's what matters!

So you don't like Trump because you think Desantis is the better candidate. I thought the same thing in 2016 when it was Cruz vs Trump. Cruz was my guy. I thought there was no way Trump could win, and almost everyone out there thought the same. He did.

This time around, why do you think it is different? Especially when Trump has decided to embrace vote harvesting where legal. Has Desantis stated how he will combat the questionable voting strategies of the Dems? Trump at least has a plan in place to correct the way he lost.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Desantis, but the actions of some of the Desantis supporters on this board are doing all they can to turn Trump supporters away from Desantis by calling them names and telling them how stupid they are for supporting him. You aren't going to convert people that way.

Not to mention that people are going hard for him when he hasn't even declared. He most likely will, but if he doesn't you guys are going to have a LOT of crawfishing to do.

Good question.

DeSantis has always been a grass roots guy. I have posted before about how he has organized in Florida to have a campaign to turn every single county into majority GOP Registrations and they are down to 4 now. He has reversed the overall registrations since taking office by over 750k and growing all the time.

When DeSantis goes to fundraisers he doesn't keep the money for himself. He does the small events with 200-800 people that go to the State and Local GOP organizations. That's both to build goodwill but also to give those folks the resources they need on the ground to get votes out.

DeSantis wanted Harmeet Dhillon while Trump backed McDaniel. Dhillon's entire message was grassroots and working with guys like Scott Pressler who scour the country and teach grass roots folks how to ballot harvest and get votes out, he even wrote a book. She also is all about election law (she is an election attorney) and wanted a full time legal team to fight those battles year round instead of waiting for election season, that's what Democrats do and that's why they get the laws in their favor. That's actually the point of my post.

Finally, Trump is lying. He isn't spending money on ballot harvesting or building grass roots. He doesn't even sign up folks at rallies. He talks a big game but virtually all of his money is going to his own legal bills and ads, mostly against DeSantis. He also spent big on going after folks like Kemp in the past and other primary folks against people he dislikes. Here is an article that breaks down the numbers.

Trump also has the advantage of being a billionaire. Desantis does not. And if you think you get money to run your campaign the way you want it you are dreadfully wrong. Desantis will be open to influence regarding campaign contributions. You can't say the same thing about Trump.

We know who Trump IS. He is a prideful man that has no restraint and says stupid stuff and is heavily involved with glorifying himself. In his presidency, he surrounded himself with terrible people. He is arrogant and NOT as conservative as I or many on this board want him to be.

What he IS is beyond influence. This is personal for him. And he also LOVES America and our status as the first and best nation and will do all he can to preserve that.

Desantis for all his convictions, does not have the same immunity to outside influence that a billionaire does.

Desantis for all his convictions, does not have the same immunity to outside influence that a billionaire does.
DeSantis has raised double what Trump has and a lot of it is from former Trump donors. He also has had "bad" press talking about how he has pissed off donors because he won't give them special access or his private phone number. He will take their money but his views are consistent, hie agenda today is virtually identical to 10 years ago when he got elected to Congress for the first time.

Fundamentally Trump is a Populist and is not tethered to ideology. That's why he will blow with the wind on issues. It's what got him in so much trouble on Covid. It's why he said we should take the guns first and worry about due process later. It's why he was a Democrat before he was a Republican. It's why he is attacking DeSantis from his Left on Social Security and eliminating the IRS.

DeSantis is fundamentally a conservative and very much about ideology. He has taken many controversial stands because he felt they were the right thing to do and he doesn't let go. That's why some can't understand why he is fighting so hard on Disney. To him it's about the principle and the larger picture. To most they can't fathom why he isn't focusing on other things and fighting a mega corporation with so much power. To DeSantis he would rather stick by his principles and lose than sell out. He joined the Navy instead of taking a big money job out of Harvard. He turned down his Congressional Pension. He refused help to pay off his student loans and did it himself.

I'd encourage you to read and listen more to DeSantis and get to know him. He is definitely not a normal politician. He's still a man and he makes mistakes but he also owns them (he admitted he was wrong to support lockdowns initially for instance and changed course once he did his own research and got his own experts). He may not be a billionaire but he isn't a guy who is concerned with personal wealthy either, he knows he can always go make money if he chooses to. He wants to make a real difference though and so far he is doing it. What he has done in Florida is just amazing when you realize what that state was in 2018.

DeSantis builds the Party, Trump Drains it

Once again, you aren't addressing how Desantis's campaign is open to influence from people with money.

Trump supporters are hilarious.

Trump: "Desantis is a horrible governor, a groomer and a doodoo head."

Trump supporters: "Yay! Trump is awesome. MAGA!!"

Some random poster on a sports-oriented message board: "With a staunch conservative choice, like Desantis, you'd have to be stupid to vote for Trump."

Trump supporters: "Oh my God, why are you being so mean?" </tears>

This take is ridiculous! If Desantis can't win the primary, why the hell would he or any other gop win the general?

Either Republicans can win or they can't. Winners win the primary.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Desantis, but the actions of some of the Desantis supporters on this board are doing all they can to turn Trump supporters away from Desantis by calling them names and telling them how stupid they are for supporting him. You aren't going to convert people that way..

I'll happily defer to aggie93s excellent response on that. Was just pointing out how ridiculous it is to complain about people on the internet being mean to the last remaining trump supporters when all he does is troll and call people names, again because he can't debate anyone on policy.

Of course some people don't care about policy and are only voting for personality. It's a free country and definitely their choice, but don't expect to not get called out on it.

Uh, because Trump supporters AREN'T Trump. You are crapping all over the man while crapping all over his supporters, forgetting that we are ALL Republicans. You guys have spent more energy attacking Trump supporters in the recent days than you have spent going after the communist regime in power. That you have ANY energy to attack your own fellow republicans is a testament to your lack of will to fight to your last breath against the progressive agenda.

This time around, why do you think it is different? Especially when Trump has decided to embrace vote harvesting where legal. Has Desantis stated how he will combat the questionable voting strategies of the Dems? Trump at least has a plan in place to correct the way he lost.
