(Bloomberg) -- The Biden administration is advancing stricter efficiency requirements for household dishwashers that promise to pare water and greenhouse gas emissions as well as utility bills, years after former President Donald Trump exempted speed-cleaning models.

Under the Energy Department's proposed standard, conventional household dishwashers made in or imported into the US as soon as 2027 would have to use 27% less power and 34% less water no more than 3.3 gallons during their normal, default cycles. Compact models would see a 22% and 11% reduction in power and water use, respectively. The requirements would not apply to other dishwasher cycles, including those with faster run times.

The dishwasher measure, advanced alongside requirements for electric motors and beverage vending machines, comes as the performance of gas stoves, washing machines and other household appliances draws scrutiny. And while the proposed dishwasher requirements promise to save consumers money over their lifetimes roughly $168 million per year according to the Energy Department's estimate there could be higher initial costs, as manufacturers design new models to comply.

First they came for the heated dry. Then they came for the phosphate detergent. I will be sticking with my 17 year old dishwasher until it craps out. "I'm from the government, and I am here to help!" So stupid.

So the Dem's ruined toilets, showers and no they are on the way to screwing over dishwashers. Let's not even talk about facilities that force single ply toilet paper on us!

What a genius idea! **** up dishwashers so that people go back to hand washing, which uses more water than dishwashers.

If you can make them better with less water, I'm all for it. I'm guessing you can't or some company would already be doing it and telling you about how much you'll save on your water bill.

Just renovated the kitchen and our new "low flow" faucet is the worst. Going to take it apart to see if there's something to remove. Anybody have any old stock?

So we'll have to wash more by hand before we put it in the dishwasher, and dump more water and dishwashing soap down the drain in the process. I seriously question whether this would accomplish anything positive.

I'm still not convinced that our washing machine really cleans clothes with so little water. I wish I had taken my Mom's old harvest gold Maytag units when she sold her house - that baby held a swimming pool of water & never required service.

edit: no fancy electronics either: pull the knob, turn the knob, push the knob.

Every appliance in my house is a replacement of another one that was no more than 7 years old.....meanwhile my grandmother still has a fridge and washer/dryer running like a champ from the 1990's. I've told her all I want to inherit is her appliances.

By the way, if you want to boost your dishwasher and laundry with the stuff the gov made the manufacturers remove, add 1/2 a teaspoon of this to your wash:

It's the pure lunacy of the left. They F up everything, so bad, one has to believe it's usually on purpose.

It is in the interest of the manufacturers to keep investing in technology that makes dishwashers more efficient in terms of water usage and how well the product actually functions. Consumers already want an appliance that uses less water (effectively) and less power as it saves on other bills. No executive fiat or legislations needed or required.

But here's the obvious outcome. People will hold on to their old dishwashers as long as they can and opt to repair them until it doesn't make sense anymore. More dishes will be washed by hand causing more grey water to go in to the sewage system or septic tanks. Lazy people will do a crappy job cleaning dishes assuring more food born illness. More disposable paper and plastic products will be used creating more garbage that fossil fuel consuming truck will have to haul to landfills.

Once again, the free market had this figured out but no, lefty just has to control literally everything.

My wife and I bought base model Kenmore (Sears) clothes washer and dryer back in early 2000 before we were married. The dryer still run like a champ. We had to replace the washed in 2018. Bought the same base model and haven't had one problem.

Now our other major appliances? Pretty much every one (ovens, stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers) have been replaced at some point. I do have a couple of chest freezers that are in the 20 year range and still kicking.

At what point is it better to pull out the drying rack and dish towels and do them by hand? If we have to pre wash anyway, why not cut out the now useless machine?

I was in the Starpower store in Addison maybe a year ago to look at audio equipment. There is a whole area for kitchen appliances, washer and dryers.

I turned one corner and there was a set-up of a commercial Maytag ... those beasts were not slick and shiny with fancy digital displays. If I was in the market for new washer and dryer... i would have bought them straight away.

Clothes washers fundamentally rely on solvents and dilution to get you clothes cleaner. The less water is used the higher the concentration of detergent and removed filth is that remains on your clothes after "washing" to get baked on by drying.

Yeah, the government wants you wearing more filth and soap scum.

Eating it too.

Speed Queen TC-5 for the win here.

We had a 17 year old set of Whirlpool Gold W/D that still worked but was showing some age. Good ol/ push/pull knobs. Knowing we intend to build a fish cabin/bay house in the next few years, and electronics fair poorly in that environment, we replaced them with a Speed Queen TC-5 washer and matching dryer. Prepped the old Whirlpools for storage for later use.

The Speed Queen definitely cleans, with an old school direct drive agitator off of a transmission. No belts here. Can fill the tub as well, as it gets by standards by having the Eco Wash setting that you can reduce the amount of water if you want to. Loads take half the time of big names on the market for each similar type wash. Wife can have 6 full size loads knocked out starting mid-morning and finishing by dinner.

Speed queen has turning knobs and timers but the start button is electronic. Afraid we just aren't gonna get away from that nowadays.

DO NOT buy a newer Maytag. Our LG washer died after 15 years and I got a Maytag, partially because we were in a pinch, and there wasn't a ton of product available due to COVID. Absolute garbage.

One of the cycles flat doesn't work, it's loud as hell, it shakes uncontrollably at times for no reason we can discern (IOW, the load is balanced), it makes noises that are not normal and sound like it's going to explode.

The dryer seems to work fine, but the washer needs a grenade tossed into it.

I just rechecked, my motorized dishwasher was installed 17 years ago this August. The other one in twice that old.
