TLDR:

Sinoloa Cartel which was run by El Chapo is on its way out. It was relatively peaceful (by cartel standards). It focused on making money and used violence as needed to support the business.

Sinoloa is being replaced by Jalisco New Generation. JNG is almost a terror organization instead of a cartel. Whereas Sinoloa used violence as a tool to support their business operations, JNG views selling drugs as a way to finance their campaign of terror.

Makes leaving all of the equipment there even more infuriating considering we can't even allocate the value of the "lost" equipment to build a wall.

Gotta love our government.

CJNG is on its way taking over virtually all of Mexico. The Sinaloa Cartel isn't the only one to lose out to them.

No he won't. Trump didn't drain the swamp, take care of the cartels, and let idiots control Covid. He was great on the economy, Russia and China, so kudos on that, but it's over. Trump needs to back DeSantis.

We are lost. These mass shootings only act to serve notice; extreme levels of violence have arrived.

Cartel actions will be commonplace. You will become numb to it. Texas is becoming Mexico so deal with it. Thanks, Democrats.

Maybe. Or society could snap back and givr a green light to really crack down on violence. If criminals were being punished crime would slow to a crawl.

Elect Trump and he'll ignore Mexican sovereignty and put an end to this? Yeah right.

Trump famously decided not to name CJNG and some others as terrorist organizations because Mexico's president asked him not to

ETA…you won't like the first 90 seconds of this video if you think Trump's the answer.

In the long run this transition may be what ends the current cartel structure in Mexico. JNG is going to generate a massive spike in violence on this side of the border, and as Zeihan points out it won't take too many dead suburban white women in Phoenix for the US government to finally declare all out war on the cartels on the Mexican side. And the US has essentially limitless leverage over the Mexican government so they will not only let it happen, they'll help.

Sinaloa always knew to not piss off the Americans too much. They didn't want drone strikes going down in their backyards. JNG doesn't seem to have any such reservations.

This is silly, the Mexican and American governments have had an understanding for decades that if Mexico couldn't keep the violence on this side of the border to a minimum we would do it for them. Intentional cartel violence in America against Americans not involved in the drug trade has always been extremely minimal, relatively speaking. If that ever changes, America has made it clear to Mexico we will wipe the current cartel structure from existence whether they like us killing their citizens or not.

If the scenario Zeihan describes comes to pass, it won't matter who the president is. The decision really wouldn't even be there's to make.

And this idea that a democrat president wouldn't carry out something like this is silly. Barack Obama had more enemies killed abroad than any leader of any western democratic nation ever. Assassination drone strikes were maybe the single biggest hallmark of his presidency. There were nearly 600 of them in something like 9 different counties. And taking out the cartels would be easy in comparison because we always know where they are at all times, unlike many of the middle eastern targets Obama took out.

Based on interviews with several different former intelligence folks I've seen in the last several months, the consensus seems to be it would only take a few weeks to effectively end all current Mexican cartel operations on both sides of the border if we ever really had a mind to do it. We know where all the major players are in Mexico at all times and have a pretty good idea where all the groups operating in the US are.

The average American thinks that if we knew where these people were in the US we'd arrest them all, and that's just not true. As long as the violence remains minimal we'll tolerate it like we have for decades because it's not worth the violence and resulting PR nightmare when everyone finds out just how many there are. But it would be very quick if we ever decide enough is enough.

It wouldn't be crazy to think people who hate the 2A (outside of this country) would want to create chaos that might endanger it so as to weaken the populace. Example: cartels or China.

China hates the 2A and has publicly said so recently.

The Cartels love that their compatriots can't fight back.

Whatever is eventually done, it can't be clandestine drone strikes or assassinations, one at a time.

It has to be fully disclosed, wholesale, extremely violent, and blitz-fast.

Have to take out every head and their (business) heirs to make sure no one wants to take up the mantle of drug lord again.

This. It needs to be a shock and awe moment on the cartels.
