DeSantis risking $17 billion investment by Disney in WDW / Florida and Iger asks if DeSantis wants Disney to reconsider whether to invest this.

That's a lot of $$$s. DeSantis may have to take an L on this one at some point.

Sounds like CEO posture speak.
He doesn't have another state he can go invest in.

The liberal ones will tax him to death and be lawless. The conservative ones will push back.
The middle of the road ones dont have any major cities.
C'mon...

Most of the time Andrew gives his opinion while also saying not his field of specialty.

On this one niche subject, it is his field of specialty and he practiced for these districts, Universal was his client for example, and knows how Florida law works in that field. He's been to those local agency meetings, gone to the legislature to try to get a Reedy Creek type deal for Universal. Their response was, "Hell no, we'll never do that again."

And as for the bonds being called, albeit unlikely, there are institutional investors that have their own people to answer to. Iger needs to reassure them that he knows what he is talking about here. And he keeps conflating Disney with Reedy Creek as if they are one and the same. Massive mistake.

It's not money over principles. DeSantis can get a great deal in his favor… for now.

Like what? What is he supposed to deal for? As far as I can tell Disney has no desire to correct their behavior, so a "deal" is just desantis dropping the issue altogether. I honestly have no idea what you're advocating for other than just let Disney do exactly what they've been doing.

Desantis should not be above criticism but criticizing him on this point makes absolutely no sense and is tacit approval of letting Disney continue to indoctrinate kids. If that's what you want, just say it.

DeSantis has the winning hand here legally and he knows it. Disney is trying to play the PR game but the longer they stretch this out the more painful it will ultimately be for them. Thus DeSantis has zero incentive to go hat in hand to Disney. He's made it clear he is open to talking but Disney has to come to HIM and not the other way around.

If DeSantis came to Disney and begged for a settlement then Disney will eviscerate him because they are more concerned with the PR battle. Disney still seems to think they can win that battle but it is very unlikely long term. You can criticize DeSantis and disagree but he is all in on this and he isn't going to quit until Disney capitulates. If you listen to that Earnings Call it is evident Iger isn't there yet, he still thinks he can win. So the pot gets bigger.

The thing that Iger has to watch out for is his stock is dropping like a rock and at some point his investors are going to come for him as he throws away Billions in value with this distraction. It already cost one CEO his job and Iger better be careful or else he is going to get thrown out on his ass. People don't like losing money for someone else's virtue signal.

The worse thing for Iger is losing the confidence of the institutional investors for the Reedy Creek bonds. He was talking with JP Morgan Chase yesterday on that earnings call for heaven's sake.

Now the new district has assumed that responsibilty for those outstanding bonds but the bondholders could still feel too nervous and sue. I don't think that will happen but it could.

Great point. Iger is basically making a massive bluff hoping he can either intimidate DeSantis into caving or thinking he can get people to sympathize that the poor, innocent little Mouse is getting bad treatment from the meanie DeSantis who is playing politics. I just don't see how either of those works because DeSantis isn't the type to cave and very few people look at Disney as the same company that it was 40 years ago. It doesn't help that all of this started over sexual and gender theory material for Elementary school kids.

The thing about DeSantis is he is very careful in the battles he chooses to fight and the people he goes after. He did his homework here and made sure he had the high ground before he went after Disney and Disney foolishly keeps thinking they can just treat him like any other politician that is just after a sound byte. DeSantis is more than willing to cause unlimited pain to Disney and make an example out of them and then wear their carcass as a skin suit.

The reality is that this is setting up a Court challenge or at least forcing the discussion to be had. It's questionable legally if Florida can really ban Digital Currency from the Federal Government especially. That conversation though is something we desperately need to have if for no other reason that we need to have protections in place and guidelines on what can and cannot happen with Digital Currency. What they did to the Canadian Truckers and what life is like in China is scary as hell.

I also recognize we have to be very careful with issues like this. This can be a double edged sword and cause far more problems than it solves if not done correctly.

DeSantis has limited power as Governor of Florida to fix this but at least he is trying and doing all he can. Clearly this is a setup for what he will use as an issue to run on in his Presidential campaign. As it stands CBDC is just quietly coming and we aren't talking about any protections. That is something we should all be very concerned about. There are few ways to take away a person's freedom more effectively than having all your money in a digital format controlled by bureaucrats and other parties.

They are nothing alike. CBDC would give the government the ability to complete shut you out of the market for any reason they want. As of right now, they can freeze your assets but you can theoretically have a stack of cash on hand and ask your employer for cash payments. Or find some side job where they'll pay you in cash.

CBDC means that's all gone. If you are convicted of wrong think, you are defaulting on mortgages, unable to feed yourself and otherwise completely ruined

I understand what CDBC is and it's risks. I am stoutly against it.

My reference to Cali is that a single state runs into trouble making rules that impact other states.

So if I use CDBC in NY, but then go to Florida, do I have to change money?

I am for DeSantis fighting CDBC, just not sure he actually has the authority to do so.

It's a fundamental difference between Trump and DeSantis. I don't doubt Trump opposes CDBC but I am not confident he understands the issues involved and knows the complex legal technicalities to come in that fight.

It's not a bad thing it's just a vulnerability. I'm sure if Trump was asked about it he would say something like "That's bad, really bad stuff. Really bad stuff." while moving his hands around and making a face. He knows more than that of course but he just sucks at expressing complex issues like this coherently. I think Trump would try and appoint someone to check into it but he's not going to dive into the details. His focus would be on getting a deal done and being ok with compromising on those details that could easily bite him in the ass later. His heart is in the right place but it is really easy to get steamrolled on these types of issues if you aren't careful.

When you watch that DeSantis interview with Stoessel it is crystal clear he has a deep understanding of the issue and the risks and you aren't going to easily slip something by him. He is very intellectually engaged and wants to be educated and put serious thought into exactly. He will also have staffers looking into every possible angle to fight it and know what levers of power he can use.

What Aggie93 said.

What's Desantis is doing is forcing conversations about issues that very few other politicians will even bring up much less fight against, including other Republicans.

And he's showing you what he plans on tackling once he's president, as opposed to spouting B.S. vague statements about "doing whatever will make the people happy" just so he can get some applause from his audience.

While you are here, have you heard anything about this? Is that accurate reporting?

Quote:

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday signed 37 bills, including a measure that will prevent the release of past and future travel records of DeSantis and other state leaders.

DeSantis also signed bills that will lead to the state inspecting Walt Disney World's monorail system and require school districts to share local property-tax revenues with charter schools.

The Republican-controlled Legislature voted along party lines to pass a bill (SB 1616) that provides a public-records exemption for travel records of DeSantis, the governor's immediate family, the lieutenant governor, Cabinet members, the House speaker, the Senate president and the chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court.
Quote:

During an appearance last week in Titusville, DeSantis said he didn't "come up" with the travel-records proposal.

"With the security situation, how you do patterns of movements, if you're somebody that is targeted, which unfortunately I am, and I get a lot of threats, that could be something that could be helpful for people that may not want to do good things," DeSantis said.

Anders Croy, communications director of a DeSantis opposition group, DeSantis Watch, said in a Twitter post Thursday that the bill was signed a day before DeSantis begins "political trips to Illinois (and) Iowa, (and) amid reports of upcoming donor dinners at the Governor's Mansion." DeSantis has been traveling across the country as he prepares for a potential 2024 presidential campaign.

The bill, which took effect immediately, also will keep from the public the names of people visiting the governor's mansion on non-governmental matters.

Right now DeSantis is showing me things that give me pause.

He had a clearer fight with Disney when he undid RCID. Going after the monorail is absolute retaliation and may get him trouble. It's written in a way that it can only apply to Disney. That's not a good look.

CDBC stuff is a bit out of nowhere and seems to be trying to wield a power he doesn't have. He could speak on the issue and lay out his policy. But he pushes for legislation that likely will not hold up. Certainly it provides cannon fodder for his critics.

DeSantis style is to be very aggressive and have multiple fronts of attack constantly. He does that in part because he knows he can keep his opponents off balance but also because he can. Not everything he does is great and you can always find something to dislike or disagree with but he gets a LOT done and the overwhelming majority is rock solid.

As for the monorail that sounds like there is something else going on there inside baseball wise. Could be as simple as a CYA to make sure that monorail with thousands of passengers on it daily is safe even though it hasn't really had an outside inspector in who knows when. Hard to argue against it as well honestly, "We need to trust Disney that they do their own inspections because they are beyond reproach" is not a great look either. They must have had some exception for the monorail outside of Reedy Creek or something, don't know.

Mainly on Disney though DeSantis is going to keep hitting until Disney stops hitting him. Iger certainly wasn't pulling punches in the earnings call so DeSantis isn't going to go soft on him when he has the legal and political high ground in Florida. I know you don't like that but DeSantis is a fighter and he's not going to be bullied.

Yep, the travel records thing has been kept low key. The whole security excuse is lame, IMO.. And while its true he supposedly didn't come up with it, he clearly is the leader of the FL Rep party and could have easily squashed this if he wanted.

I'm a fan of transparency, so not a fan of this. But as fans of other candidates like to say, no one is perfect or has a perfect track record. I weigh this and a few other negatives (in my book) against his positives and he still has my vote by a wide margin.

That's either based on personal direct knowledge or super-uber fanboi speak. I would be curious as to which it actually is. Just a question.

I admit I like the guy but really all I do is follow a few of his main accounts on Twitter. He's just the most effective conservative politician I've seen in a very long time, maybe in my lifetime. I've never seen someone get so many bills passed on so many issues of importance and that can speak that clearly about the issues.

A lot of the analysis is I have just been following politics closely for 40 years and I studied POLS in school, it's just a pastime.I admit I am an information junkie on politics but Twitter makes that pretty easy to do with minimal effort. I remember the days of having to read through long articles and watch TV for hours to get what I can get in a few seconds on Twitter now.

As for this post I just didn't want to clutter the board with everything DeSantis was doing at the end of this session, I knew it was going to be busy. It also gives a nice reference point as people say "What has DeSantis done?"

The monorail bill is clearly directed at Disney of course. There's an argument to be made either way - maybe its too specific and is too punitive to Disney; or maybe its a good offensive move to make sure Disney knows he means business. And that second argument is the more important one to Desantis, IMO - its a reminder to Disney this isn't going away and he's not just bluster. And based on what I've seen from Desantis so far I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say hes not worried about it being too specific to Disney. Desantis seems to always have his ducks in a row, and he certainly has so far on this Disney business.

As for the travel stuff, agreed, at best its not a good look.

Roger that. And I appreciate the insight and information gathering. I too am an information junkie as I have the time and the interest.

Sometimes folks indeed know people who either have dealt directly with the candidate or with people on the campaign. I tend to find those anecdotal takes most interesting. DeSantis is very close to the vest and that can be a good thing to some and worrisome to others.

The man is about to be hit with attacks from all sides. His farts will be analyzed to the mirco-molecule and listening to folks debate "it stinks" v "smells like roses" are going to be pushed aside by manipulated details.

So DeSantis being aggressive and attacking on all fronts because thats just who Ron DeSantis is will not fly, in my opinion.
