It's a wonder to me IBM isn't just circling the drain. They run expensive TV commercials all the time for their Watson APIs but I've met zero developers who ever use them. They're a complete non-entity in any kind architecture discussion I've had in the last 8 years or so. It's a forgone conclusion to build and deploy for AWS or Azure. Nobody even speaks of IBM. I guess they must still be limping on all their legacy mainframe stuff.

This

A computer would naturally choose the most competent and qualified candidate rather than the candidate most likely to be a loyal Dem voter.

Can't have that

For those of you that are convinced AI isn't going to have that big on an effect on the job force… this is your canary in a coal mine.

AI could definitely replace part of my job. Fortunately a big part of my job required verifying the quality and accuracy of records and dealing with other human beings, and the AI would not do so well there to work out solutions for problems for which there is no records or data yet. It won't necessarily get rid of most jobs so much as it will make them much more productive so fewer people will be needed.

I am an attorney, and for years there have been efforts by some clients to introduce AI into the litigation field. It did not look ready for prime time, but this latest evolution is looking like it has substance. I think it is only a matter of time before more entry-level/routine/mundane functions are outsourced to AI (basic pleading and discovery drafting, settlement analysis, etc.). I see it being more difficult for baby lawyers to learn the ropes when the basics are handled by machine.

They are pretty diversified and have a huge BPO and consulting business. I agree with you though on the business units you mentioned.

Still planning to have a presence in Austin in a smaller horizontal space at the original 1967 site (now The Domain):

IBM will move to new Domain building by 2027
Quote:

IBM will move its Austin workforce into a new, 500,000-square-foot office development in North Austin by 2027, the company is announcing today.

Why it matters: The announcement comes two days after CEO Arvind Krishna's acknowledgement that IBM plans to replace jobs with AI and as tech industry downsizing has led companies to pull back on leasing office spaces.

Driving the news: Construction for the new project at 11901 N. MoPac Expressway is expected to begin later this year, featuring two 14-story interconnected towers that include eight stories of parking.

There are only so many blue collar jobs available/needed. An increase in workers would drive labor costs down.

This.

It isn't ready for the high level judgment calls. But some of the low-level grunt work...its getting there in a hurry.

Learn to do a blue collar job. Coding will be almost entirely replaced by AI.

Once AI is able to parse federal regulations and understand nuance and legalese, it's all over for many white collar jobs.

IBM got taken over by Indians and then it became a glorified service company. It's fallen very very far from the 1960s.

Pretty much.

If your job is done on a computer, and you have no customer interaction, AI is might be helping you find another line of work pretty soon.

Yeah. I feel like IBM management is using AI as the excuse for what has been a long deteriorating business.

AI can already synthesize voice correctly and near perfectly.

And this is just a poor example of using a language model for voice interaction. It's going to get very very good soon such that you won't be able to tell it's not a human on the phone.

Video conferencing will be easy as well.

AI is coming for everything where you don't physically work with your hands. This means surgeons and blue collar workers.

It is scary just how far AI has come. It's going to be great for companies who will have less people to pay, but that will also have the repercussions of there being less jobs available to those educated in those, or similar, areas.

I'd also add teachers and nurses to your list. Outside of that, I can't think of any large pools of workers that'll be safe from what's coming.

Saw where they are still having a lot of trouble with "hallucinations" where AI makes things up - laws, references, people, etc. Until things can be verified - and who is going to determine that - it's gonna be hard for companies to put 100% faith in what they are asking AI to do.
