Democratic Rep. Colin Allred is planning to announce a run against Sen. Ted Cruz as soon as this week, according to two people familiar with his plans.

Allred may well follow O'Rourke's model. Even if he doesn't win, he will raise his political cachet with a 2024 run against Cruz giving himself national exposure and building a massive donor list.

He has demonstrated an ability to excite Democrats and pick up independents or moderate Republicans, earning endorsements from the AFL-CIO and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for his congressional runs.

The biggest question about this race to me is:

Is there anything Beto can run for before he enters this race?

Shouldn't Beta maybe try running as mayor of Austin? Strikes me as the one state-wide race he might have a chance at.

Allred isn't a bad choice for the Dems as he checks boxes. Black ex football player from Baylor. Votes with Biden 100%. I'm sure the Media will make him out to be Obama 2.0.

Much better candidate than Beto IMO. More likeable and in touch with voters. Used to be my congressman and he seemed well-liked in Dallas. Whether he is a strong candidate to take on Cruz remains to be seen.

Question I have is, can Cruz change his image enough to not let this guy sweep in to victory with the soccer mom vote?

He'll have a D next to his name and if he comes off charismatic and likable (easy to do compared to Cruz) while avoiding saying anything crazy like he's coming to take your guns he'll be a contender.

Why do all leftist men have soy face? Something about his eyebrows and his mouth just makes him look like a feminized beta, which he is.

This looks like a screenshot from a webconference. You aren't seriously saying Cruz is a better looking guy than him are you? I think I can safely say he is.

Baylor grad, former pro football player, lawyer, Obama admin, etc. you should be concerned. Cruz is unlikable as hell.

You know why I didn't want Beto to run against Abbott? Because Beto ran against the most unlikable guy in congress in a blue wave year and still lost.

Cruz is like if constipation were a person. Anyone who loses to him should be permanently disqualified from running for office.

Allred isnt the constitutional scholar that Cruz is, but he went to UC Berkeley for law school. I doubt he's a slouch intellectually.

How about he actually campaign this time vs mailing in an expected win while letting the GOP get railed in down ballot races like 2018?

Maybe in other states, but Texas latinos will not vote for the black man over a white or latino. This is the facts

Cruz will be fine in a Presidential Election year with a strong turnout in Texas.

Cruz is also Ranking on Commerce so he becomes Chairman if the GOP takes the Senate and he may be able to be Chair of Rules while also getting very Senior on Judiciary. He's got a massively successful Podcast and a huge national profile.

Literally the only thing Allred can run against him on is looks and Cancun. I seriously doubt Cruz takes this one as lightly as he did against Beto either. Sorry to crush your dreams.

Biden outperformed Allred in his own district by almost 5 points. I think Allred might be overestimating his likeability. He must still be riding the high after crushing a no-name last year after the GOP apparently gave up on the district.

I hope this means I don't have to hear his constant YouTube ads anymore after he loses to Cruz.

Yep. The Dems can try and run another youthful candidate, but it's not going to erase the stench of Biden and his policies in a state like Texas. Abbott wasn't exactly universally loved, but he won easily in large part due to the contrast with Biden's policies.

But I'm sure we'll hear a lot of "Cruz man bad!!" for the next year and a half.
