hard to believe it could be much worse

Erdogan has always styled himself a modern Turkish Pasha who wants to recreate the Ottoman Empire

he has been vicious towards the Kurds, stunting democracy in Turkey, vicious against the Israelis until recently, and buddies with Iran and Russia

he has also been a PITA with NATO expansion of Sweden because the Swedes give support to the Kurds

I hope Turkey can re-democracize (that a word?) if he passes. He had a stranglehold on that country and sent it backwards.

I always take the "red siren" tweets with a very small grain of salt.

My first tinfoil hat thought was Russia.
Seemed like Turkey was playing both sides a bit in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and they did supply Ukraine with the Bayraktar drones. Russia is also known for exposing political adversaries to unusual toxins.

Then again, heart attacks happen.

Turkey (in it's various forms over time) is also an ancient enemy of Russia. The cozying up to Russia by Erdogan was pretty unusual given the history.

Turkey has had big swings from theocratic rulers to secular rulers and then party way back to theocratic under Erdogan. It would be nice to not have a muslim fundamentalist take over in Turkey.

Erdogan's consolidation of power after the last coup attempt (or fake coup attempt) makes me think a similar loyalist will take his place

The guy literally did the opposite of what a normal president would do with their economy. He removed every economic advisor that told him he was doing the wrong things. He is the reason why the Turkish lira is worth nothing.

Had a family member on a Baptist missionary trip land in Istanbul during the first hours of the fake coup attempt. Hostilities broke while he was in the air. Holed up in a hotel and was able to leave without too much trouble, but it was pretty intense as he could see military vehicles from the window at times. Needless to say he didn't complete the mission work as it was going to be there in Turkey and it wasn't a good time for that without the risk of martyrdom

I traveled to Turkey in 2019, visited Istanbul, Antalya and made it to the Med for a few days. Every single Turkish person I interacted with was as welcoming and friendly as they could be. Loved visiting the country and would absolutely go back again. I pray for their sake that they get a better leader than Erdogan!

Turkey is a beautiful country with a lot of folks with modern outlooks. But it's been caught up in populist leadership for a long time and that's led them to some dark places.

I don't know if things will improve a whole lot. I was reviewing data the other day which indicates a huge portion of their population is young enough to have largely gone through the education system entirely during Erdogan's rule. He and his government have long been involved in molding curriculum in their country to mold minds to fit their world view

Just for reference…when did Hillary get there?

Maybe this will be the start of an epidemic affecting presidents around the world.

What do you hope to achieve? Are you there to ask the locals what church they go to and if they have ever heard of Christ and try to sell them an uneducated watered down version of Christianity.

Patriarchs and Bishops are killed and they replace them and keep going.

The Rum (Christians) have been persecuted for 500 years and have held onto their faith. The Muslims aren't going to convert because they want to be able to send their kids to school and not be persecuted.

Most of the times these "missions" seem like a grift to get others to pay for a free trip to a cool place.

Protestants are so ignorant of the Christian world outside of their own country. Less aware of how they are perceived as wackadoodle by far more ancient Christian communities.

Go to Africa, go to India…. Orthodox countries have always said better the turbin than the Pope. Protestantism is far worse than the Pope.
