Hall of Fame basketball coach Phil Jackson has admitted to no longer following the NBA because it's become 'woke' and too 'political' since the 2020 bubble.

The 77-year-old, who won 11 NBA championships as a head coach, claimed that he hasn't stayed up to date with recent developments in the league since 2020, while speaking to the Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin podcast.

Three years ago postseason games were played in the 'bubble' at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and players were permitted to display messages on the back of their jerseys, such as 'Justice' and 'Black Lives Matter'. Only a few kept their last names on their shirts.

'I am not enjoying the game,' Jackson said on the podcast on April 5. 'There's a whole generation that doesn't like the game.

'They did something that was kind of wanky, they did a bubble down in Orlando, and all the teams that could qualify went down there and stayed down there.'

Jackson, who won rings with the Chicago Bulls (1989-1998) and Los Angeles Lakers (1999-2004, 2005-2011), added: 'And they had things on their back like, ''Justice.'' They made a funny thing like, ''Justice just went to the basket and Equal Opportunity just knocked him down.''

'[...] My grandkids thought that was pretty funny to play up those names. [...] I couldn't watch that.

'The Lakers won that year,' he recalled. 'They even had slogans on the floor and the baseline. It was trying to cater to an audience or trying to bring a certain audience to the game, and they didn't know it was turning other people off. People want to see sports as non-political.

'Politics stays out of the game; it doesn't need to be there.'

I was a rabid Spurs fan for decades until Popadick called me a racist and said he preferred if I wasn't a fan because I voted for Trump. I never thought I'd say that Phil Jackson is awesome. FWIW, I haven't watched a game in almost 7 years and don't miss it. I'm never going to be a fan of the NBA again.

I stopped emotionally investing in all sports summer of 2020. The entire industry best viewers over the head non stop amd the things people involved in sport said and did made it completely impossible to give a damn about any of it. I'll probably take my kids to a football or baseball game occasionally, and it was cool to see my oldest really get in to astros baseball last year, but I could not care less about any of it, amd ibwas a pretty rabid sports fan for a long long time.

Dang this is actually surprising and refreshing coming from him as I always thought he was some woke hippie. I think he's part of the old school sane liberal faction that is extremely rare and which I can tolerate.

Popovich and Steve Kerr are completely brainwashed clowns. It's like they're overcompensating for past racist beliefs in their outward projections or something. Lots of black dudes on their teams aren't "down for the cause" as much as they pretend to be. Clowns.

This is me exactly. I freaking hated the Lakers and Jackson as a Spurs fan but he is exactly on point.

I grew up with the famous "Iceman" George Gervin poster on the wall of my room that he autographed for me. I followed them through all the ups and downs with David Robinson and then of course they got Timmy Duncan. The next couple decades were just amazing. Hell, I had a few thousand posts on "Basketball Other" and followed everything about them. The Duncan/Ginobilli/Parker era was just amazing not only because they won so much but they were easy to root for, they played the game the right way and they were broke away from the thuggish image of most of the NBA. Went to 2 games during the '03 Finals and saw seeing them win the Title on the home floor with Robinson coming out of the game when it was in hand was one of my greatest sports memories. Loved watching TNT Inside the NBA with Barkley.

Pop would make a political comment here and there but it was rare and just his opinions, he wasn't preachy and he didn't let it distract. Slowly that kept changing and the politics became more and more open and preachy. Somewhere in there I just stopped watching. Then eventually I stopped caring at all. It's been quite a few years since I watched any NBA game. I honestly have no idea how what their record has been the last few years, I simply turn off anything having to do with the NBA. I couldn't tell you who won the Championship the last 5 years.

I have zero plans to ever watch anything related to the NBA again, I refuse to support them in any way.

The world is a lot bigger than the TexAgs Politics board.

1.5 BILLION people watched the 2022 World Cup Final last year between France and Argentina. And no idea if a thread was started here about the World Cup but if so it was probably full of 'soccer sucks' and 'don't care, never watch' posts…

And totally okay. Folks have different interests and hobbies. Obviously there are still plenty of folks nationwide and in the world who enjoy the NBA particularly the playoffs.

This post-season, if both Lakers ( with LeBron) and Warriors (with Curry) make it too second round, it will probably be the highest rated 2nd round NBA playoff series in several years. The NBA's appeal to its fanbase has always been about the story lines.

Unfortunately it will just continue to get worse. The younger the generation the more politicized they are. They have now been raised in the social media era.
Of course it matters little to me as I haven't watched an NBA game in probably well over 15 years. Used to love it back in the 90's though.

Now do the regular season. Here's a hint. It's down from the 90s to the 2000s, and it's way down the last 3 years from even 2018/2019. There a very specific reason for it

NBA spiked dramatically back up to a league record $10 billion in revenue last year after two COVID down years. Look at their revenue year-by-year chart. It appears to be trend up business between television, merchandising, sponsorships, and ticket sales.

It's not easy to compare ratings and revenue from different eras because so much has changed over the past 30 years.

In terms of ratings, the 1998 NBA Finals averaged over 29 million viewers. Last year's Finals averaged 12.4 million viewers, which was up from an all-time low of 7.5 during 2020. And that's with a US population that has grown by 30-40 million people since the 90s. For comparison, the Super Bowl sat at around 80 million viewers throughout the 90s, yet had 112 million viewers in 2023.

However, ratings for all tv programs have dropped dramatically over time as the internet and streaming have changed the way people consume content. Sports are one of the few things that people will still watch live, and that has pushed up the value of the tv rights. And there has been massive inflation, so you would expect revenue to go up. And the NBA makes a lot of money China now. And they have sponsors on the jerseys now, among other things.

So it's not as easy as saying that "ratings are down, so the NBA isn't popular now" or "revenue is up, so the NBA is more popular than ever now".

Popovich is such a fraud. He is proving to the world, what his worth is without Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu, Parker, etc., which is below average. He knows he is going to get fired soon for his pathetic record these last few seasons, and instead is ramping up the political discourse, hoping to get canned for his comments, so he can go out like a martyr instead of a failure.
