We couldn't even have calculators in calculus, EA or differential equations in HS. Such a bummer.

Curious if anyone under 40 knows what a party line is.

Age 50+. We had one in the 1970s.

A friend's family had a ranch that was passed down for all the cousins to own. The ranch house needed a phone but it was rarely used because people were there only a couple of weekends each month. So they got a party line. The cost was next to nothing, like $5/month. When they sold the ranch in the 1990s I think they were the only number still on the party line.

The first thing you would do if you had to make a call was listen for a dial tone. If you made a long distance call the operator would ask for your number before connecting it.

I'm 56. We had a party line when I was very young. So did my grandmother.

I'm torn. Student was clearly disrespectful and initiated physical contact. However the sub's response was obviously excessive, especially given their size disparity. So maybe she doesn't go to jail, but I don't think she need to go back in a classroom.

My mom worked for the phone company. She got my sister and I a line to share, even had our number in the phone book under the listing of "Children's Phone" or something like that. Guess I was lucky.
So you're who we were calling late at night about the "free monkeys"!

The teacher was assaulted first -- and the girl got what was coming to her.

Right now, kids in school are out of control with no discipline, no respect, with teachers getting no support from administrators and afraid to report it or to even defend themselves.

This is why this is a breath of fresh air seeing a teacher not putting up with crap and I do not care when people say that these are "just children" with children pulling triggers and killing just like adults.

As a teacher, tell the kids when they can have their phones out and when they can't. They either comply and life is good or they don't and they end up in the office. It's really not that big of an issue if you can manage a classroom.

Lol. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're not a teacher and haven't ever been one. This is an early leader for least informed post of the day.

As an aside there are some very practical reasons for cell phones in school. My son is a Type 1 Diabetic and his cell phone is connected to his Continuous Glucose Monitor so it allows me and him to see what his Blood Sugar is at all times and to immediately recognize sharp lows and highs. It's very much a safety issue and definitely gives my wife and I peace of mind. That said my son is highly responsible with it and he is a very strong student.

Outside of some exceptions like that though I'm all for very restrictive cell phone policies at school.

Schools were STUPID to ever go away from a no tolerance policy on phones in the classroom. Ours had to be turned off an in your backpack if you had one. You'd likely see grades improve drastically and discipline issued fall drastically.
I got suspended for 3 days in middle school for having a pager that didn't even work. My dad took it up with the administration and they let me make up all my work when I got back. So my dad and I took a 3 day camping trip.

cheaper than private. Paid party line rate but no one else in the area wanted a party line so we were the only house on the line.

What?

It was obvious to me at a young age that I shouldn't physically engage another person that is obviously more physically powerful than me.

Throw in the positional power of the teacher / student subordination, and this was an OBVIOUSLY CORRECT action by the teacher.

The fact that this is even being debated is absurd.
