Video: Yet another student gets physical with teacher for taking phone but this time teacher fights back

Quote:

WRAL said Rocky Mount police are looking into the fight; no charges were filed as of Monday afternoon, and no injuries were reported.

Steele has been with Nash County Public Schools for approximately a year, the station said.

NCPS policy states that "if an employee is attacked by a student, the employee has the right to reasonably restrain the student and defend themselves to the point that they are free of the threat or attack," WRAL reported.

The district's phone policy states that "administrators may authorize individual students to use wireless communication devices for personal purposes when there is a reasonable need for such communication," the station said, adding that the teacher was within her rights to take the phone if it was visible, or if the student was using it.

Schools were STUPID to ever go away from a no tolerance policy on phones in the classroom. Ours had to be turned off an in your backpack if you had one. You'd likely see grades improve drastically and discipline issued fall drastically.

Off and in the locker. If they heard it ring or vibrate in a locker, it was confiscated.

Private school, so their rules are a bit different and can do things public schools can't.

Public schools can make these rules as well. They just don't. There is no state law that requires public schools allow the student's to have cell phones. I can't recall the specific schools but there are a few I've read about who have reversed course and gone back to this policy of years ago. They saw academic performance skyrocket. It's common sense.

It is the fallout and blowback that public schools won't don't. Private schools will say "You don't like it, GTFO." Public schools don't have that option.

I'm so old that the then-current phones when I was in high school were the ubiquitous Nokia dumb phones. There were a few serial offenders whose phones would always ring in class - almost always because a parent was calling to "check in." The eye rolling and social pressure of the time was enough to at least get those phones turned off or left in the locker.

As a teacher, tell the kids when they can have their phones out and when they can't. They either comply and life is good or they don't and they end up in the office. It's really not that big of an issue if you can manage a classroom.

Teachers should beware even if it taking away cell phones is an approved policy. Taking them away from some kids these days is like taking crack away from a crack addict. They get nervous and edgy when they don't have that think in their hands all the time. I can imagine it is a terrible distraction in the classroom.

I'm old enough to remember the principal turning off the pay-phones during class hours. If you needed to call a parent to change a ride home, you talked to the principal's secretary.

I still think it's crazy that kids are allowed to have phones in school.
I could only imagine the uproar by parents if schools banned them.

I was at that time in high school where some kids had pagers, but cell phones were non-existent, beyond the rare car phone, or the Zach Morris phone that some parents would have. You weren't allowed to have either in the school or it would get confiscated.

As for kids and phones these days, it's unrealistic to ban them from campus. My kids aren't allowed to have them out during class, but they pull them out between classes. I don't know how strictly it's enforced, if I ever pick them up from school the office will have me text them to let them know I'm here and to get their stuff ready, so they seem to expect that kids will pull them out.

I can see substitutes being the cause of most friction. Subs probably hear that the school's policy is to confiscate them if kids have them out, but the kids are probably used to the teacher letting them pull phones out near the end of class.

Why even have public schools in inner cities? Who benefits? Other than the communities that are spared the uptick in crime for a handful of hours per day? Is it just a form of daycare and crime prevention funded by our tax dollars? It certainly isn't education.

The only policy needed is students give their phones to the teacher on the way into the classroom. If the student acts up, the teacher administers proper punishment.

Remember when you tried to call your friend and it was busy so you dialed the operator and asked them to make "an emergency breakthrough"? That would piss my buddy's parents off to no end!

My mom worked for the phone company. She got my sister and I a line to share, even had our number in the phone book under the listing of "Children's Phone" or something like that. Guess I was lucky.

The vast majority of public schools are now just glorified daycare centers. Teaching/educating students is now secondary to serving as a drop off point for many kids who just don't give a F-k.

I'm torn. Student was clearly disrespectful and initiated physical contact. However the sub's response was obviously excessive, especially given their size disparity. So maybe she doesn't go to jail, but I don't think she need to go back in a classroom.

I think she needs to stay in the classroom. Kids need to ****ing learn that if they're old enough to throw hands, they're old enough to get the **** beat out of them.

This problem starts at home. If parents won't beat their kids' asses, I'm fine with the teachers doing it when necessary.

This. The sub should sue the school for creating an unsafe work environment.

If someone takes a swing at you, you have every right to beat/subdue them until you're certain they're not going to attempt to harm you again.
