Quote:

FARMINGTON, N.M. Police released body camera footage and 911 audio on Friday of officers fatally shooting a homeowner after they responded to the wrong house for a domestic violence call.

Farmington Police officers killed Robert Dotson, 52, when he answered the door with a handgun on April 5 at about 11:30 p.m., police initially said.

The newly released videos show the unidentified officers immediately opening fire after Dotson opened the door with the gun. Officers opened fire again after a woman was heard in the video screaming. Police previously said the woman, Dotson's wife, returned fire to the officers. She was not injured.

I cannot imagine the rage I would feel as a family member. It's too bad the wife didn't shoot every single one of these dumb ****s.

Looks like the victim may have came out of the house with a drawn and pointed gun. I give this the 24 hour rule.

Why would you open the door to the police holding a gun? That is spectacularly stupid

What more do you expect to see other than the video in the next 24 hours?

Someone bangs on my door at 1130pm I'd probably be armed too.

24 hour rule, sure, but the cops are already admitting it's a screw up. The homeowner did not deserve what happened, but why in Hades do you just walk out the door into that crap. If it's bad guys, you're outnumbered. If it's cops, you're outnumbered, too. Either group is going to shoot if you walk out displaying a gun. I'm staying inside and calling 911. Somebody busts the door down, that's something else

I wouldn't answer.

But probably the police did their loud shouting and fist slams on the door, so it might seem a bit more threatening than your typical door knock.

All the more reason to stay inside, call 911, and barricade.

Look again at the front door. If there was a peephole in the door, it was covered up by an Easter Bunny decoration. He could not see who outside.

Back when I was at A&M, there was a particularly gruesome murder of a student who went back to her apartment with a guy hiding in her closet. My older brother brought me a Saturday Night Special because I was working an internship with a prosecutor's office during the summe and living alone in a four plex.

One night, at 2 in the morning, there was pounding on my front door. I took the gun with me. Looked out of the peephole but saw nothing. Then I saw someone at the front window next to the door. Peeked out. It was a good friend of mine who had locked himself out of his apartment. Front doors in that place were basically luan so had I shot through the door at such a close distance, I would have shot him.

Sad situation but victims were illogical and reckless in pointing the gun.

Um... it's dark out and that's the dude's private property that he's allowed to protect. I don't know if police announced their presence or he went out thinking a robber was there. Either way... THE POLICE WERE AT THE WRONG HOUSE. They own this and the chief there has all but said as much.

Go bang on random doors at 10:30 pm and more often than not you will probably encounter the person opening the door holding a gun. These cops are major idiots.

Of course they announced. He should've stayed in the house. Once he raised his gun and pointed then he's deservedly toast.

When we dig down to the root cause...

OK, John Doe home owner could have done some things different.

But IF THOSE COPS WEREN'T BANGING IN THE WRONG DOOR!!! Root cause, those idiots were at the wrong house! Negligent homicide, every one of them!

Good thing that bad guys aren't allowed to yell that they're police, since that's illegal. You should always assume that someone who claims to be the police definitely has no alternative motive.

You think in home invasions the bad guys don't claim to be the law? Saying it is a cop at the door, banging and screaming means as much to me as someone saying it is Batman. I won't believe it.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Police were idiots and went to the wrong address, unfortunately they were about to figure out their **** up when the idiot homeowner showed up. I think the last thing I'm gonna do if the police show up is open the door and point a gun at them. Darwin Award winner there.

It's an unfortunate event, both parties ****ed up. IMO though the homeowner had the more egregious mistake.

Yea, you should always open the door with a gun and point it at whoever is at your door. That's obviously the best solution.

Granted we are on a ranch out in the boonies but had a neighbor who kept losing their dog who would come to our place to mess with our dog.. Usually, the kid would ride over in an UTV to retrieve the dog after we called.

One night, the kid came over without us calling and it was 2 AM. The Hubs sees those headlights and on the back porch armed, in a few seconds He's at high ready, with a thermal scope (present I bought him years ago). Hubs also had a spot light and flashed that at the kid. Realized who it was and stood down.

A few weeks later he saw the Dad and told him what had happened. The Dad said, "Thanks for not shooting my son but if you had, I would have completely understood why. I'll talk to him again about going onto other people's property."

Yeah, that's about where I'm at.

Guy was incredibly stupid. If you are fairly certain it is the police, don't open the door with a gun. If you have doubts it's the police, don't open the door.

But the real fault falls with the dip****s that went to the wrong house.

It's amazing how often police get a simple address wrong. If the stoned pizza guy can get the right house there isn't any reason for police to **** it up this often.
APHIS AG
How long do you want to ignore this user?
So the cops show up to a house disturbance call with their guns drawn and then they find out that they are at the wrong address and still have their guns drawn. The guy does not get one foot out the door when three cops see the gun, no warnings to drop the gun, just instantly open fire.

I guess every encounter these cops have is always with guns drawn. The problem I have with this in that the cops do not have the time to evaluate the situation and deadly force is used every time.

There is always retribution for things like that. We don't get to see it, and garner emotional satisfaction, which is what many people wrongly want.
Anyone who chooses to ride a bicycle in the street is a threat to themselves, and others. If a vehicle strikes you accidentally, YOU are at fault; and the laws of physics supercede all else when you're in the path of a 2 ton killing machine. Know your place, stay off the road.

Answering the door with a gun, as opposed to shouting out a window or calling 911 is probably not a good idea...but you make a solid point about location.

How tf does that get screwed up? I deal with complicated "location" issues allot, and always manage to find the right parcel.
