GOP senators preparing for McConnell retirement

  • Now multiple sources confirm that Senators John Barrasso of North Dakota, John Cornyn of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota are actively reaching out to fellow Republican senators in efforts to prepare for an anticipated leadership vote that would occur upon announcement that McConnell would be retiring from his duties as leader, and presumably the Senate itself.

Thune, Barasso, and Cornyn are of Hive Mind, all are pure GOPe. All are "safe" conservatives who will have decent voting records but compromise on things that drive conservatives crazy. They will vote for every Ukraine bill imaginable as well.

Only thing good on Cornyn is he would likely be just as solid on confirming conservative Justices. Bad thing is he "likes to work with Democrats" meaning he likes to get taken to the woodshed so he can feel bipartisan.

Cornyn is a fine choice. Let Cruz throw bombs like he normally does, but leave the adminstration of the Senate to Cornyn.

I know many of yall think he is a RINO. But yall are morons. He is a good choice and will be good for Texas.

Listening to him on Judiciary it is the area he comes across as most conservative. He's also ok on the Border. He seems to be solid on confirming Justices just as McConnell was. Could we do better? Sure, but there are worse as well.

I consider Cornyn just like Lindsay Graham. May ask some tough questions but still votes them in.

Amen. Leader is a popularity contest, like student body president, but with PAC money. You support others with your dollars, term after term, and they'll vote for you when it's time. The bombthrowers have very few friends amongst their colleagues.

I agree, but the cabal of McConnell, Thune, Cornyn, and Barrasso have sternly ruled the caucus for years. It absolutely will be one of them, and the Rinotrain will roll along unchanged.

Cornyn will deliver big on amnesty if he gets the position. He's long been the Manchurian candidate of the illegal immigration lobby.

The good news about Cornyn replacing turtle is that we can actually get out the vote in Texas to make change happen. It felt so frustrating waiting for folks in Kentucky to make the change.

Luckily, I think Cornyn in Texas has to be feeling heat after his gaffes. Let's hold his feet to the fire.

Slowly there are more who are against the RINOs but they are still a minority of about 2 to 1. A lot of it is age based, the Boomers are virtually all RINOs with maybe one or two exceptions like Rick Scott and Ron Johnson and the Boomers outnumber everyone and have the Seniority to control committees.

List of Senators by age, look at everyone over 60 vs below

Ted Cruz and Rand Paul will never be allowed anywhere close to that position. They are the two most hated GOP Senators by their own party. Dems obviously hate them, but they are largely marginalized by their own party.

The hope is many of the Boomers will age out, only a handful of them are not pure Swamp creatures (Grassley is a Silent not a Boomer as well). Many of these are in the category of just caring about staying in power and will vote for whomever is the winning side. The bolded ones are not RINOs.

Charles E. Grassley 89
Mitch McConnell 80
Jim Risch 79
Mitt Romney 75
John Boozman 72
Roger Wicker 71
Michael Crapo 71
Roger Wicker 71
John Kennedy 71
Deb Fischer 71
Rick Scott 70
John Cornyn 70
John Barrasso 70
Susan Collins 70
Marsha Blackburn 70
Shelley Moore Capito 69
Tommy Tuberville 68
Jerry Moran 68
Mike Braun 68
Mike Rounds 68
Cynthia Lummis 68
Lindsey Graham 67
Ron Johnson 67
Lisa Murkowski 65
Bill Cassidy 65
John Hoeven 65
Cindy Hyde-Smith 63
Bill Hagerty 63
Thom Tillis 62
Roger Marshall 62
Kevin Cramer 61
John Thune 61
Steve Daines 60

Now look at the Under 60 crowd of Gen X and elder Millenials, the bolded ones have all opposed McConnell or are definitely not RINOs and some of the others are still very green:

Rand Paul 59
Dan Sullivan 58
Tim Scott 57
James Lankford 54
Ted Cruz 52
Joni Ernst 52
Mike Lee 51
Ted Budd 51
Marco Rubio 51
Todd Young 50
Eric Schmitt 47
Tom Cotton 45
Markwayne Mullin 45
Josh Hawley 43
Katie Britt 40
J.D. Vance 38

It's a numbers game in the end but there is hope when you look at the future. The RINOs just have the majority. Another big factor is if whomever replaces McConnell can wield the same power with his PAC and style as he did or if they decide to go more Kevin McCarthy style and be more balanced.

Good list, but I wouldn't call Tommy Tuberville a RINO just yet...

He's in the second group that isn't a RINO but he certainly isn't a conservative. He hasn't made a stance against McConnell and he won't. He's basically just an old football coach that votes the right way.

That said you could certainly make arguments for many on that list, there are only so many that are strongly in one camp or the other. The striking thing is that the age does seem to stand out as a factor.
