GOP senators preparing for McConnell retirement

  • Now multiple sources confirm that Senators John Barrasso of North Dakota, John Cornyn of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota are actively reaching out to fellow Republican senators in efforts to prepare for an anticipated leadership vote that would occur upon announcement that McConnell would be retiring from his duties as leader, and presumably the Senate itself.

Cornyn as leader of the senate republicans? I think this forum would implode

Cornyn has always been McConnell's heir apparent.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Why can't we have Cruse? Or do we always have to have RINOs in positions like this?

Because there are more RINOs than conservatives in the Senate by a long shot. Hopefully the conservative wing can at least get someone more to the right than McConnell has been. Cornyn is probalby most likely, but he isn't any better than Turtle.

I guess it would be a good thing that Texans could give him an earful and he would at least have to listen a little knowing if he got too far to the middle he might find himself in a tough primary fight.

I predict he will wield very little control/power over the US Senate in retirement. Frankly, I bet he doesn't even turn to TV gigs much. He's got family commie money to blow through now, and not all that many years to do it.

I second the notion that Rand Paul should be the guy to pick a slate of 3 for the commie governor to choose from. There have to be a few decent patriotic Kentuckians I don't know of.

Cornyn is a fine choice. Let Cruz throw bombs like he normally does, but leave the adminstration of the Senate to Cornyn.

I know many of yall think he is a RINO. But yall are morons. He is a good choice and will be good for Texas.

He is a no backbone POS that has folded numerous times when 'leadership' was needed most. **** him. You want to put someone there that won't be as vocal or polarizing as Cruz or Paul; go with Mike Lee.

You guys are looking at this the wrong way. If he got elected Minority/Majority Leader, he'd presumably have to help with Senate elections all over the country instead of just his own, which means we'd get Tough, Conservative John Cornyn every 2 years instead of the every 6 we get now.

Read the link - an update was put out 8 minutes ago. McConnell tweeted he's looking forward to being back on Monday. He can not resign because the Democratic governor will get to appoint the replacement. He needs to stay in until they can vote the Gov out. Hopefully, they will run a better candidate this time.

Kentucky law requires the governor to appoint a replacement from the same party.

The party would submit candidates to the governor (I think its 3), from which he would pick one.

Not true. Kentucky legislation requires the governor to choose from three nominees decided by the leadership of the party of the person retiring. He can't appoint a democrat

Well, that's good news. Glad it won't give the Dems another senator. I just read that. The Kentucky legislature overrode the Governor's veto on this topic. So I guess this has been in motion for a while. Hopefully, the people of Kentucky will fix their mistake an elect a conservative Governor this November.
