I don't want to survive the first strike. Nuclear fallout, the collapse of society, the bands of marauders... it will not be a fun time.

I'll take disintegrating in less than a second, Bob.

has every disaster that has occurred over the last twenty years taught us nothing? if we go nuclear no one from the govt is coming. fall out shelters are a thing of the past. we are screwed but at least our govt leaders will be safe in their bunkers.

Most of the responses above assume all out war with thousands of nuclear detonations. There is also a scenario in which a limited exchange occurs. Houston is considered a top 5 target. One big nuke in downtown Houston means there would be no wind or heat damage in Magnolia, and would require about 7 days in the shelter before the fallout significantly reduces (depending on wind direction).

In any case, it appears that most of the public shelters are gone now.

They convinced to stay home for two weeks because of a virus. Some people still haven't come out of their shells. How long do you think the government would keep us down for a nuclear blast?

I do. Rural America will not be fine, but we'll have a chance.

Y'all in the cities are fooked. Sorry.

Guess you have never heard of a Cobalt bomb? If we have a nuclear exchange with China, who has a long term outlook on everything, rural America is going first.

The assumption here is that Russian guidance systems are accurate enough to actually hit their target and that few weapons would be dispatched against any one target. The truth is that Russian guidance systems are crap and the much more likely scenario would be a shotgun scattering of many nukes in and around the target area with them hoping one of them will hit.

There's a reason the Russians have always had bigger & larger stockpiles of weapons. When we go for the Kremlin the question will be which window we want to place it in. Russians are hoping to get their launch in the same county as the target

If it involves having to live underground, eating crap food for months, I'd just rather be at a ground zero and move on to a better place

In a nuclear exchange with anyone, even limited, every inch of ground between Freeport and Lake Charles would be fried. The entire Houston ship channel would fry, along with NASA, the Med Center, IAH, the energy corridor, downtown, and uptown.

Houston is gone in any nuclear event.

Yep. Southeast Texas to NOLA has always been a Tier 1 target for complete bombardment in a first strike.

Ironically, liberals are trying to obtain basically the same result via legislation and fairy tales of green energy.

So you're arguing that China has the ability AND would go to the expense and effort of blanketing a few million square miles with cobalt-60 thus rendering the land uninhabitable for at least decades because they play long game? Nah. No country is going to invest that kind of resources in destroying land with no strategic value to all out global warfare. It's not that complicated. Just like the Russians, any nuclear exchange would have tiered targets that focused on military, economic, leadership, population, and infrastructure centers. I don't think Xi is that concerned about taking out the pecan crop in San Saba Co.

The whole point is silly anyway. I was merely stating that yes rural America is screwed too but I would rather be out there with a chance to continue on than be incinerated in a metro area or dying of radiation sickness and societal collapse in the suburbs. But sorry, unless you're parked next to a silo in the Dakotas, rural America is not going first.

I swear there was one on campus at one point that was like a cafe or study center.

Maybe in that Math building in the late 80's/early 90's
Northgate Post Office
Adding... Pretty sure there was one in the MSC, but certainly it didn't survive the renovation

I remember the one in the MSC and the post office. Coincidentally, I was just one the phone with my dad so I asked him about fallout shelters on campus when he was there (class of '66) he said there were a bunch of them, and why are you asking me such a random question at 10:00 in the morning?
