The last article I've read on paper plates was Feb 8th, the Texas house was considering abolishing them. I wonder which little weasels are working the Reps to enrich themselves, because there is nothing in the news?
Please contact your Texas Rep, it takes all of 5 minutes. By email or phone on the Texas website.

Paper plates do need to be abolished. If you buy a new car, take your old plates with you. Go online and change the vehicle info. Why is that so hard? Other states do it. If you do a private party sale, require going to the courthouse to do it, during the title trade.

I just bought a new car, and I didn't have old plates to take with me because I didn't sell or trade a car. What is the solution for that?

Dealerships/courthouses keep metal plates on hand, and you go online and register them to the vehicle you just bought.

Dealers maintain plates or you have 72 hours to get plates.

That would work. Dealer told me it's about 3 weeks turn around to get my plates which seems way too long.

I didn't know any of this, very good info thanks!
Also I just emailed my rep Geanie Morrison to see where the bill stands in session, it took all of 5 minutes. Please think of doing the same, put pressure on your rep! We've got to get these vehicles off the streets.

No issue with paper plates that are good for 60 days when you buy a vehicle. Just end the loophole that allows people to skirt the requirement for getting metal plates after 60 days.

Sell plates like a gift card. Activated when purchased. Scrape the code on the back to register them.

I know people who had stacks of the paper temp tags and would replace them every 60 days to avoid paying taxes/registering the car.

And that's the issue that needs to be fixed.

Wait. We still need license plates?

Not by the looks of the cars I've seen out and about with NOTHING affixed

We have plenty of prison labor to keep the place stocked in plates

No excuse

I never understood why it was 60 days to start with. It should have been like one week.

It frequently takes the OEM 3-6 weeks to generate a title on a new car which makes it impossible to license the car in 1 week. For used cars it should be 1 week since the title is signed at time of sale.

While we are at it, can we get rid of the bull**** inspections for non commercial vehicles? People don't get into wrecks because their cars are rolling junk. They get into wrecks because of cell phones, alcohol, and they drive like selfish jackasses.

I would think paper tags also enable and embolden criminals? These are black market illegitimate tags in almost all cases, right?

What if I'm adding a car and not trading anything in?

Just ranting here...
Got fouled up with DOT in an F350. Came from the dealer (new in Aug 21) with a 2 year registration, but only a 1 year safety inspection. Since the registration wasn't expiring we forgot to get a new inspection. A State Inspection that would have cost $7 in Texas ran me $150 at a truck stop in Wyoming to get legal. $150 to tell me my headlights, high beams, turn signals, tail lights, brake lights, and horn work. Oh and my windshield washers & wipers work.

Oh and we've got a set of paper tags on another DOT truck right now. We bought it out of Alberta and have to wait for an appointment at the Sheriff Dept before we can register it in Texas. But Texas was happy to sell us a stack of 14 day permits for $50 so we could send it out on a job!

We should just paint or decal the numbers on the side like they do with airplanes and boats.

Dealerships don't have any plates, just the courthouse.

You'll see dealership folks at the local courthouse and courthouse annex's everyday with that day's sales and title transfers. Don't think you'd EVER see the state release plates to dealers. WAY too much opportunity for fraud. It's dealers easy ability to print paper tags that have gotten us into this paper mess. It would be 10x worse if shady dealers were passing out long term legit plates!

I have bought 2 new vehicles in my life. The first time I had real plates within a day. The next time I had real plates when I drove off the lot. I don't understand how these people have paper plates on their cars for so long.

I gave bought 5 new cars and each time I had to return to the dealer a week or so later to pick up the plates. In the interim, I had paper plates.

Only benefit during that time was free parking at the airport and free tolls.

Do you know how many small dealers there are? Lots of people flip cars on the side and you have to register as a dealer if you sell more than 5 a year. So that would be a logistical nightmare and would lead to them buying and selling plates without cars.
