HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- After weeks of rumors and speculation across the Houston area, the highest official at the Texas Education Agency confirmed the state will be taking over the Houston Independent School District for some time.

"Ultimately, this intervention is necessary," Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath said.

Leaders at HISD received a letter on Wednesday morning notifying them that the TEA will temporarily take over the state's largest school district. The decision came following reported failures on the district level and multiple schools that have faced unsatisfactory grades for several years.

This won't fix the systemic rot caused by families who do not care about their children, and/or the serious lack of fathers in children's lives. No amount of money, reform, or care from the teachers is going to help most of these kids. Sadly, their futures are very bleak.

But maybe it will at least clean up the corruption that is rampant within the district when it comes to how they spend money. Wouldn't be surprised if some people end up going to prison once the books get audited.

Can TEA be authorized to take over the entire City of Houston? Maybe start with the corruption around airport concessions contracts?

Is control ever relinquished back to the locals once taken? This seems like the education version of the EPA Superfund sites, just a way to guarantee high salaries for govt. leeches without any hope of fixing the problem.

They should break it up into a few smaller districts.

The TEA won't control HISD forever.

If I understand the takeover process, it is designed to remove the garbage at the top, most of whom are incompetent, corrupt, or both.

Hopefully the state can do this with the city and the county also. Lots to cleanup and lots of people need to see the inside of a jail cell.

Some conversation about it, though this thread doesn't include an article

We always hear about the importance of minority and women's in management…..so when the house of cards falls and there is systematic corruption I wonder who the administrators are and how many received their advanced degrees from a mail order program.

It's fascinating to see how many Ed.D's there are in school districts today, all requiring everyone to call them "Doctor So and So."

The state of Texas can take over a city or county if the legislature decides it is necessary. The legislature could even dissolve a city or county completely, and either temporarily implement direct control from Austin (as in the capital, not the city), or merge it with another entity.

That is Dr. Jill Biden to you, sir.

Administration has grown to the point where it's a job in and of itself without actually handling anything related to schooling. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah, I imagine there are some administrators and board members puckered up pretty good right now. Wonder how many papers get shredded and hard drives mysteriously crash over the next couple of weeks?

This needed to happen. It's the only hope of anything ever changing. It sends a pretty strong signal to other big districts to get their act together or else.

They did this to La Marque ISD several years ago. Texas City eventually absorbed the schools.

Pretty sure a lot of the worst of the trouble makers are long gone. Doesn't mean they can't be tracked down, but I think a lot of changes were made several years ago in an attempt to avoid this.

Even with a LOT of improvement looks like TEA says it wasn't enough.

What would happen if they just dissolved it and redraw lines for adjacent districts to absorb?

The scores and graduation rates in those neighboring districts would plummet and TEA would need to take over those as wells.

Seriously though, dissolving would be best. Pass out vouchers and let the parents and kids decide what to do with money. Then use border wall leftovers to fortify 610 perimeter.

I used to live in SA.
They have 2 million people and like 45 (sarcasm, but not by much) ISDs up there.
Really?
Industry consolidation creates economies of scale, but NOT IN ISDs?

You are right.
I wonder if this would happen faster if we severed athletics from schools.
I am all for privatization.
Think about it. FKAFTC/Tarpon Sports Leagues would have the rule "Girls Play Girls and Boys Play Boys" thus eliminating all this trans-action. Non of this "government" rule creep.

We used to teach kids at the local level, typically in one room per town / hood, and it included parental oversight, involvement and plenty of practical education such as cleaning stables, sawing lumber, and mending fences.

Local control of rearing children is a must. Protect against the parents who do not give a **** about their kids, and stay the **** out of my way as I raise my child. I am damn sure he and his mother are more than capable of raising him / her / they as a chronically misgendered fairy kitten paranormal anomaly all on our own.

Dude!! That sounds like that "it takes a village" stuff democRATS push.

Parents should rear their kids.

fka ftc

It does take a village because **** happens and parents die or decide to do incredibly stupid, irresponsible things.

But a village is a collective community of support. Your village may be your family, your circle of friends, your neighborhood or your church.
