The American MQ-9 Reaper drone and two SU-27 Flanker jets conducting a routine operation in international airspace when one of the Russian jets intentionally flew in front of and dumped fuel in front of the unmanned drone, according to a US official familiar with the incident.

In a statement, General James Hecker, who overseas the US air force in the region, said:

Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and complete loss of the MQ-9.
In fact, this unsafe and unprofessional act by the Russians nearly caused both aircraft to crash.
US and Allied aircraft will continue to operate in international airspace and we call on the Russians to conduct themselves professionally and safely.

I am glad the unmanned aircraft attendant person was not injured in this.

And good for Russia. Time they punch ol Joe in the mouth a couple of times. We look totally weak on the world stage. I encourage others taking advantage of this, particularly if it effects the libs who voted for this *****

Meh...
Russians are getting their a$$es kicked in Ukraine. With some American weapons, and with mostly American $$$$.

Its not shocking that they wouldn't take kindly to a drone over the Black Sea.

Curious, would the wake and turbulence from an Su-30 on afterburner cause the drone to crash without physically hitting it?

Iran didn't shoot it down, they hijacked the signal and landed it in Iran.

We never signed the UNCLOS that sets a country's boundaries 12 nautical miles from the coastline so being an unmanned aircraft I doubt we escalate more than some words being spoken. I would help Ukraine with plans to strike the base where this aircraft lifted off from to send Russia a message without escalating.

So the headline should read: Russian pilot intentionally downs American drone in international airspace.

Those of us who keep saying we should let Europe handle European problems - these are the incremental issues we keep warning about. Washington will frame this as a dangerous escalation whereas Russia will probably view it is a fitting response to US hostilities (US hardware and advisors have been killing Russians for a while now while this is a Russian destroying unmanned American hardware).

Turkey is a weird potato. I was on orders and I had a layover in Istanbul. I had to sign a memorandum saying I wouldn't leave the airport. DoD doesn't want Soldiers running around Turkey.
