FJB graduated high school in '61. This was 8 years before the Stonewall Inn riots in NYC so openly gay behavior was still illegal everywhere. His dad would have turned to him and said "Keep an eye on them while I call the cops."

Exactly. When I was in high school in the mid-1980s, my father would not have told me that gays had the right to be married, much less his father in the 1950s. Heck, my dad wouldn't tell you that TODAY. And I call BS on him seeing a public display of affection in the 1950s - unless it was more common in the Puerto Rican community.
