So this week we are all alarmed at video showing four Americans getting kidnapped and shoved into a truck while in Matamoros. The plates on the American car are from North Carolina. The story is they went for a medical procedure* and/or medication. These are not uncommon reasons for people to go to Mexico these days. Unfortunately, kidnappings or fear of kidnappings is also not unusual. It is pretty commonly known that you need to take a lot of precautions when travelling there because these are known problems. A lot of Americans have already gone missing there. Not to diminish this in the least, but why all the sudden shock over this and government initiative? What makes these people worthy of a reward and government action when previous victims barely get mentioned? Why are these people different?
*Personal note - a friend of mine from childhood struggled with weight in her 50s and got gastric surgery in Mexico a while back. She suffered some ill affects due to a botched surgery and died about 2 years afterward. Patient beware.
