  • They started granting citizenship to goths, huns, and other non Romans, which led to a lack of nationalism, and a lack of loyalty to Rome.
  • Overspending, leading to excessive taxation on the poor, which led to a greater divide between rich and poor, and crushing inflation. The wealthy avoided taxes by fleeing to the countryside and setting up fiefdoms. The slaves had to compete for necessities for survival. Rome's supply of slaves and other war treasures began to dry up.
  • Over-expansion led to overspending on the military which led to a lack of funds and resources available for citizens.
  • Government corruption, political division, and instability. The praetorian guard (the deep state of Rome) would kill off and install emperors as they saw fit. The senate failed to stop this due to corruption within its own ranks. The senate failed to be an effective check on the emperor. Due to the incompetence of their leaders, civic pride waned.
  • Mass immigration with non Romans eventually allowed to live in Rome. This produced an enemy within.
  • Erosion of the traditional Roman values system. Focus shifted away from the glory of the state.
  • Hiring of mercenaries and a decline of a strong loyal military.
  • The rise of a Eastern Empire.
  • Invasion by barbarian tribes.

Read City of God by St. Augustine - he was alive and one of the wisest men in the known world at the exact time you're talking about here. He attributes it to a different cause. We'd do well to fix the problem he identifies as the root of Rome's decadence.

Sounds like what many liberals and democrats are doing to to America today. Just a matter of time before the demise of this great country because of their idiotic policies.

Probably nothing to do with the financial decisions of the elites.

I have heard of The City of God, but have never read it. So, I looked up what Augustine attributed the fall to for myself, and perhaps for others here:
    Quote:

... Augustine answered the accusation that the Christian religion had weakened the defense of the Rome by asserting that this overlooked that the real cause of its collapse was its moral bankruptcy that had spawned a society where justice was no longer valued.

Augustine quoted the Roman historians as themselves recognizing the brutality at the very root of the nation, right from the very beginning of Rome with the murder of Romulus by his brother Remus. In contrast, Augustine proposed that the virtues of the Christian faith were most consistent with good citizenship.

I'm as conservative as the next guy and a Christian but Christianity was a major cause of the downfall of the Roman Empire. At least in the eastern part of Rome. Prior to that the multiple religions of the people that were sacked by Rome were used against the conquered and helped the empire assimilate the people to the empire. In other words they told the commoners that Cesar was that it god (or one of the gods) that they believed in. This kept them loyal to Roman and not the church. Going to one single god, in Rome, that was not actually the Cesar lead people to trust the church more than the empire or not trust the church or the empire. The church had different goals than the Roman Empire. It caused division of east and West and that was a major reason for the downfall. The people of the west were poor and the people in the east were wealthy and believed in multiple gods.

I can see how this being written coming out of Rome would have this perspective though.

    The Sack of Rome

so the Roman Empire which had existed for hundreds of years, had literally slaughtered probably around a million people, and sacked Jerusalem in 70 AD.

suddenly AFTER they found Christianity 300 years later they lost their morality?!

thanks, but I'm not taking global political and military advice from St. Augustine.

    I might live there though!

The template looks like this to me:

Nothings going wrong! Those protests are mostly peaceful! (As cities are burning, and rates of depression increasing amongst youth)

Groomer's don't exist! (After Parents start rising up at school board meetings in response to actual attempts at grooming THEIR young children).

Racism & Hate are everywhere, and theyre directed at us/zhem/xme! (After alphabet soup community, antifa, and liberal-progressives step up attacks on conservatives, non-whites who vote Republican, and Christians).

global warming, and the pandemic are destroying the planet! (After both proven to be hoaxes).

ESG isn't real, and it's not doing any harm! (After Major corporations begin kneecapping themselves with DEI criteria).

*Once the dust settles, and misery is the new equity.*

Progressives: nobody saw this coming, we had no idea! it was all due to economic failures! We now have to re-build society! (In their image.) Look how the Republicans were gaslighting all of us! This is their fault!
