My point was all it would take would be an unfortunate incident and we would have blamed the Russians. Maybe a rouge Ukrainian unit could have taken him out and blamed the Russians. Why take that risk.

Because the real risk is an accidental war. Russia can intentionally start one whenever they choose. Going secretly would have been idiotic and wouldn't have prevented a Ukrainian conspiracy.

We were in a proxy war in Vietnam and Korea and nobody got nuked. There is a reason why we've not been providing Ukraine with strategic weapons to attack Russian bases deep inside Russia, even when that would yield the greatest value. As long as the fighting stays in the contested area for the most part it should not expand to other areas, as Russia clearly cannot afford to widen the conflict.
