I ordered the take down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace. @NORADCommand shot down the object over the Yukon. Canadian and U.S. aircraft were scrambled, and a U.S. F-22 successfully fired at the object.

BREAKING NORAD following 1 object in North America, potentially spy balloons pic.twitter.com/P9LYSUcuhO

F-22 has the highest ceiling of any US fighter jet, and likely in the world. If they were at or near 60,000ft only the F-22 can live up there and engage in combat activities. It is above the ceiling of it's Vulcan cannon so can only use missiles. The short range AIM-9X with the heat/infrared tracking ability seem to be working well. An early concern with the first balloon was the ability of the missile to track that type of object as the heat signature isn't very high. The F-35A (Air Force variant) is rumored to have a ceiling of around 45,000ft but I don't know if that has been officially confirmed.aezmvp said:
I'm not sure what the ceiling on the F35 is but the F22 has a higher ceiling than the 18s that Canada uses. They only just got their 35s this year I think.
Canada only has force projection of their military because we transport them to the theater. Use our transport planes and ships. Can't do squat on their own, has always been my understanding.Athanasius said:
Paid so much for healthcare that we had to shoot it down for them.
LOL. Too true.GAC06 said:
They apparently need assistance projecting all the way to Canadian airspace.
BREAKING: NORAD has confirmed the “high altitude airborne object” has been shot down over Northern Canada. It was seen scrambling to get into US airspace where it would be safe, offered asylum, given a driver’s license, and put up in a swanky New York City hotel.

Open source stuff lists the F-22 and F-15 with a ceiling of 65k. Russia still operates the MiG-31 listed at over 80k. F-16/18/35 all around 50k
