Did the brakes cause the derail?
Sounds like it burned a journal off, which is a large race bearing. When one of those go all hell breaks loose!
Figures, race is always the issue.

Ever see a nascar pileup? Now picture the cars being even closer and confined to a single lane. There just isn't time for a ******ing force to do enough work to change the outcome.WaltonAg18 said:
Quick question, if an axle issue is identified, how do you think the train is safely brought to a stop? Fairy dust and pixie magic?
Oh no hold on, it's a braking system first developed in the late 1800s. Sure is a crying shame that no newer technology has been developed since then.

A train derailment in Ohio is currently emitting massive amounts of carcinogenic compounds into the air, this alone would be enough to be interesting but it seems there is more to the story. Norfolk Southern seems to be operating hand in hand with the government in this area,… https://t.co/GE2PChlWco pic.twitter.com/WZyNGIYKYX

If the train experts say that the brakes wouldn't make a difference, I'll accept that my drunkenly posting to the contrary is irrelevant to the thread.Dan Scott said:
For the last week, when I turn on the news, I see reporting about Santos, MTG screaming, and Trump attacking DeSantis. Not too much about this.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. From reading a bit on the final report, it appears that the chemical is used to sterilize agricultural land and the solution was to dilute it until it was no longer detectable at harmful levels (Dr. Peterson at A&M would always say "the solution to pollution is dilution").Shoefly! said:
Southern Pacific had a derailment years ago that spilled hazardous materials into the Shasta River in California, the company and insurers picked up the tab. It damn near bankrupted the company but they made it through the emergency and the river, after 30-40 years has made it back from a chemical death.
I wasn’t going to watch this. But it is important to show. My colleague was trying to do his job. This video shows Ohio’s commander of the National Guard, Adjutant General Maj. Gen. John C. Harris Jr., shove my colleague. Escalating the situation. @NationalGuard @NewsNation pic.twitter.com/CW3ldxbGZL

Journalists covering the story have been arrested.

Oh he's been making the media circuit, but curiously no one brought up the derailment.jt2hunt said:
Where is out transportation secretary speaking about this event??
This is insane clown world!
Pete Buttigieg was on three Sunday shows last week and didn’t get a single question about the Norfolk Southern derailment in Ohio, because none of those shows covered it all. They all had Pete on to preview Biden’s State of the Union speech instead https://t.co/HrbKaXfJse

The really confusing thing is why aren't the republicans jumping on this story? It's the perfect chance to talk about the inadequacies of our transportation secretary and the administration as a whole, but even they have chosen not to speak out about it. The entire situation is very off.

What portion of our Ukraine budget would it take to cover the retrofit? Guessing it would be a fraction of what this episode will cost.Shoefly! said:
That's a good read by the "Lever"! I remember when the Railroads were pushing for the new Electronic System, and they thought they could get the congress to pay for it. That's what it boils down to, who's going to ante up for the new braking system.

"We basically nuked a town with chemicals so we could get a railroad open," said Silverado Caggiano, a hazardous materials specialist.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sent a letter to Norfolk Southern stating that ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylhexyl acrylate and isobutylene were also in the rail cars that were derailed, breached and/or on fire.

"The crew did receive an alarm from a wayside detector shortly before the derailment indicating a mechanical issue," [Michael] Graham[, a member of the NTSB] said. "Then an emergency brake application initiated."
The NTBS says there was an alert, but it is not known if it came from the hot box detector in Salem or the next one down the track 20 miles away in East Palestine.
Quote:
"We have obtained two videos which show preliminary indications of mechanical issues on one of the rail car axles," said Michael Graham, a member of the NTSB.
