We aren't in a recession guys.

This is how it went in Q4 2022. They made some calls.

Tech Company: "Hi (insert employee name here) we would like to see you back at work 1/3/2023 at 9am."

Tech Worker: "Ummm....I want to work from home. I am still scared of COVID." (Worker checks that social media posts about his/her/it/they trip to Mexico and Tibet are private).

Tech Company: "That is no longer the direction we are going to. See you in January."

Tech Worker: "No sorry. I want to work from..." (Dialtone).

That is who I hope they are laying off.

End WFH for company leadership and HR and they'll have the team back in the office in a couple weeks.

In my company these two groups are protecting WFH only because they take advantage of it.
...the Big 12 is now viewed as the fifth of the big BCS leagues by many recruits. (Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell; August 2013)

Already the weakest of the “Power Five” conferences, the league (Big 12) is hemorrhaging fans, wins, TV ratings and respect. (SA Express R. Bragg; Oct 12, 2016)

I think it would be interesting to see WHO in these orgs are getting laid off. Is it the actual tech workers or is it the support staff? I am in tech myself and see way too many diversity officers, HR/admin positions.

WFH isn't the issue for everyone. Only for the lazy. I work from home 90% of the time and get way more work done. Day's I go into the office I end up working for several hours into the night after my kids get to bed because all the procrastinators in the office that want to chit chat and get off task. I politely as possible put them off but it still sucks up time. But when working from home I'm working. Not one of those that takes a 3 hour break to take the dog for a walk and go to yoga. It can be a very productive work environment for many. I imagine the younger generations don't handle it as well.

Except they will target older workers who cost them more money regardless of WFH, its what they do.

I primarily worked from home even before covid for a few years. But primarily because I have to work with people in China, India, and elsewhere in other time zones. All of my meetings are in the morning for the most part and if I would have to drive into the office during that time it would be an hour each day cut out of my possible meeting times...so no go.

Every company (tech or not) gets fat when things go well. It's the time you want to invest in growth for future profits. When times get rough, you cut back on those expenses as well as use the opportunity to cut employees who haven't panned out (underperforming or otherwise not worth keeping). The larger your profit during good times, the larger the cuts during down times will be. Just part of the game.

In my industry, we've actually seen people be more productive working from home. I still prefer the office environment, but certainly can't knock the ones who are working from home.

Damn. That is still a thing?

You are 100% on the money with this.
I am still shocked this is still a "thing."

When the revenue line keeps falling from 2019 figures, the opex line keeps rising from 2019 and the bottom line keeps falling from 2019 levels they will be "wished well" or be back at work to save their jobs.

Are you going in everyday?
I hope you will move up the ladder with big $$$$ after the low productive group never returns to the office.
