Wouldn't be a bad idea, both were instances that has shown data can be copied and replicated infinitely with minimal differences between original and counterfeited.

Bitcoin, alternatively, created digital scarcity.

Wait, was that a joke that went over my head?

Man, not even remotely close regarding magnetic tape / analog.

But once DVDs took off, look out. That was only replaced in later years by laserdiscs, which could be copied ad infinitum.

Damn I miss laserdiscs.

Digital scarcity does not, will not create value. Not sure why that concept is hard to understand.

I understand your intended reference, but VHS can NOT be copied infinitely if you are using the source to copy. There is natural degradation of the tape over time and with each playback. So progressive copies would get much worse.

Also copies of VHS tapes can be sold for real money.

The moment banks decide they aren't going to exchange Bitcoin for money, well then you are left with a pile of Bitcoin.

Great, a class designed to teach eager students how they too create their own digital money out of nothing and market it as a game changing tool fighting the evil of centralized banking, learn tricks like wash trading to help artificially push the trading volume and price up, hype the hell out it in social media about how revolutionary blockchain technology is…all in the hope that they too will eventually be able to rake in a bunch of investor money seduced by the dream of 1000X returns.

Can't wait to hear who might be on the class's guest speaker list.

Yeah, definitely not the course's agenda considering it's following Jimmy songs "programming bitcoin."

But s'okay. You'd have had to read a bit of challenging (technically and metaphysically) text to figure out what that is about. So I understand why you'd state something so ignorantly, proudly.

It's sort of fun to watch Adverse's head slowly explode as the "ignorant masses" continue to reject the digital Ponzi scheme. If only everyone were as smart as him, he'd be rich!

I hope he has a diversified portfolio. It's only going to get worse.

Are you making claim that bitcoin adoption is decreasing or stalled? Is that the premise? How would you support your claim?

By all verifiable statistics, bitcoin adoption is growing in every direction feasible.

[ol]
  • The idea that a new cryptocurrency could simply replicate the technology and surpass Bitcoin in value and adoption is highly unlikely, as we've seen with over 10,000 cryptocurrency competitors that have failed to do so.
  • Bitcoin's value is determined by its technology, network effect, and trust and adoption it has gained over the years, that's why it's still standing as the most valuable and widely adopted cryptocurrency.
  • Forks like Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Satoshi's Vision, which were created as an attempt to improve upon Bitcoin's technology, have not been able to surpass Bitcoin in value and adoption.
  • The critic's argument that the creation of a "better" bitcoin would make current Bitcoin worthless is misguided and does not take into account the significant network effect and trust that Bitcoin has built up over the years, and the historical references like the "blocksize wars" that Bitcoin went through.
  • It's also worth mentioning that Bitcoin's decentralized nature and its ability to withstand forks and competitors, and still maintain its value and reliability, is a testament to its robustness and resilience.

Man, not even remotely close on Laser Disc. They had been around since the late 70s/early 80s and never took off in the US. Prob bc you couldn't record TV like vCRs and back then that was a huge deal. DVDs replaced LDs! Look at the size alone lol.

If you're going to post smug like at least be factually correct.

A fair question. New or better won't have a store of value already in the new coin. It will create a shift over time, and this is a risk that you might take. No different than Fiat though.....

Laserdiscs were far superior and its not even close. You must have missed the great debate on the subject. Someone can link it for you.

Gold has averaged over 8% per year since Nixon closed the gold window in 1971

Not too many assets have that performance, and I bet you've never heard that stat.

Yup, and god help you if you loaned a friend a tape and they left it in the car on a hot day. One of them was notorious for doing that but at least it was with her own crap. I extracted a copy of WOW Worship! 1999 from her car radio at least a couple of times.

As someone who has been very fortunate financially, and who also has worked in the software development field for decades, I have had a genuine curiosity about the digital currency stuff. I've been on GitHub and browsed some code.

The financial advisory/investment broker/banking team that I use won't touch that market at as of this time. Too volatile. Too many significant unknowns.

Part of me at times has thought to buy a few Bitcoin just for chuckles anyways, but what has nagged me about this digital currency stuff is the technology appears to be more or less useless for somebody like myself. I have overseas accounts. I can already move money around easily. I can already use my credit card to buy anything, anywhere, in seconds.

Bitcoin isn't like the PC or the internet or the smart phone. It isn't a 'revolutionary' technology anywhere near that sort of level. If Bitcoin completely disappeared tomorrow (Price == 0.0), life wouldn't miss a beat except those who are directly working in that market or who sunk their life savings into it. Be a major news story and everybody have their popcorn out, and then most of us would move right on with our day. The total valuation of that market is still extremely minor to the overall economy. But if the PC or internet or smart phones all disappeared tomorrow...total societal chaos.

It has been over a decade now, at this point it would have been obvious if there was such a mainstream use-case. There obviously isn't. And it not having one is a large reason why I can't even convince myself to buy some just for chuckles. Mostly, it appears to be a digital casino/high-risk speculative stock trading/political statement/use it for money transfers to get around regulations and 'know your customer' checks because I'm maybe a shady individual use-case. I am not in that target audience, nor is a large percentage of the population in that target audience...so...some will win big, some will lose big, have fun in Vegas.

But still fascinating to watch. for me largely because of the tremendous amount of fraud and scams invited by the unregulated banking system layer that has grown on top of it...that has been fascinating to watch play out and no doubt will continue to be.

Very well said and my take would be similar, down to the IT understanding, financial advisory team, considering a dabble, and nothing about it that seems revolutionary.

I respect both iterations of ae and their passion is great, but there are legitimate questions and concerns on crypto that have not been answered... some not even been asked yet.
