As opposed to slapping the steer on the ass?

There's tons more to worry over than Rash putting purple glitter on the champion steer to represent a purple banner.

The show circuit is as political as it gets.
Always has been.
Which is why a friend of mine from college lasted a total of 2 years as an ag teacher.

He told me that when it came to dealing with parents, it was the worst...worse than any coaching job. Tons of politics and huge amounts of money at stake.
My Dad was a county agent in Bee and Live Oak counties. The politics/parents ran him out of the vocation also. Some parents treated him like a hired servant. I don't know how many steers/lambs that man has groomed in his life that weren't our own. He could never tell anyone no.

That's back when we used to show steers with long hair and balled up tails. Took a long time and lots of clipping/adhesive spray to get one to look right.

Guy is a hell of a judge. Any species. He has a photographic memory and doesn't look at the animals as he talks reasons. He just remembers them. He takes the time to speak with each kid in the ring.

He is a bit quirky but he knows it. As someone mentioned earlier, he appears to be a conservative based upon his social media. To be selected by fair boards across the country and be as "in demand" as he is to judge these livestock shows, I can assure you he is not trying to destroy the 4-H and FFA programs. I think you would be hard pressed to find many folks who have contributed as much to these programs as he has.

The girl doesn't look confused, she looks like she is crying tears of joy knowing she just won. The glitter is just his way of picking the winner. Rash is flamboyant, but he's not an in your face, shove it down your throat gay promoter. He is is a little much, but picks the best animal to win, not my favorite style, but nothing to get worked up over. The video doesn't do him justice, just makes everything look weird to an outsider.

He's a Aggie Grad. I grew up showing against him at the Majors when I showed cattle. He & his brother were also at A&M the same time I was at A&M.

His family runs Showbox Magazine & Texas Junior Livestock Association. He and his brother won numerous Grand Champion Steers at the Major Shows when they showed.

He also raises and sells show cattle and like the video also judges big cattle shows across the country.

I came into this thread to read about the woke left taking over FFA but that's not really what I found here.

It exists with PETA. PETA been trying to shut down FFA/4-H for years and they are getting more aggressive. As far as this topic Rash is a good judge and been good for the show industry

That was my takeaway from my years in 4-H. At the local county fair I had to physically present my animals to the guy with the white labcoat and a clipboard and answer his questions. I was scared and nervous, but a kid needs to put through that kind of pressure every now and then.

When I went to the big show, no interaction with the judges at all. It was just too large a show. It's been a long time, but I guess maybe they would cull it to the top 50 or 100 initially. Then have another round of judging that is interactive, and crown the grand champion from there.

Mr. Rash is an accomplished livestock judge. His eye for cattle is unmatched.

He's been voted the TOP #1 livestock judge.
He's a AGGIE and a very nice person.

I guarantee you that he has had to deal with more in his life than any of you keyboard warriors ever have.
You probably don't even know him.

This kind of thread needs to be flagged.

This thread is not political at all. He's always had a thing for flare and theatrics. Ryan has been that way for as long as I can remember. We used to show against the Rashs.

Is there a lot of money being thrown around? Yes. It has become a millionaire's hobby. Growing up you could find a $2,000 steer and win your class at San Antonio, Fort Worth, San Angelo. Now it's more like $10,000 - $20,000. We have seen steers as high as $50,000.
Don't forget "snow storm" heifers - they were lost in a snow storm and weren't found for months before registering them.

Wait what...

He sells/works on the animals that win and he ends up getting $$$$ from that.

Holy ****, I mean I thought most business people tried to hide any connections they had to it wouldn't be viewed as improper, he isn't even trying to hide it?

As the story goes, there allegedly might have been more than one animal on that ranch with something illegal in its system, but someone allegedly beat the feds there and took care of the problem. It's total hearsay, but I've certainly heard it in a variety of circles.

Was watching online this morning and he (the first time I had ever seen him) was judging Simbrah show at the Cattlemens Congress in OKC. I was caught off guard by his coat initially and then when he announced the grand champion he they the purple glitter at the heifer and I thought that heifer was going to take the poor girls arm off...Not a fan at all on throwing glitter at the winner.

This comment is NOT directed at Ryan Rash, as I do not know him at all.

However, from what I've read so far about him, his case is very similar to many I've seen in 4-H & FFA circles regarding a concerning trend:

  • He's a judge with an accomplished history of experience in Texas 4-H/FFA circles and competitions.
  • He also owns a cattle company that breeds competition animals.
  • He also owns a consulting company in which... "He has selected and supervised the Grand Champion or Reserve Grand Champion steers for junior exhibitors at Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and the Grand Champion steer at the Houston Livestock Show 6 times and the Reserve Grand Champion Steer at Houston twice."

Having seen multiple competitions directly affected by judges who have selected Champions that were "coincidentally" animals in which they were personally compensated for either selling or "consulting" on, as well as seeing range judging and other competitions (CDM & Ag ID) have selections that were identical to training examples that were offered in 'camps' run by those same judges, I will go as far to say that the Ag competition involves big $$, and is becoming more and more a rigged game.

The things I never expected to learn today when I awakened.

I will make a humble observation here that may wind up in me in a time out and tons of horse apples thrown in my direction but ......just because a person is a graduate of Texas A&M University doesn't mean he automatically walks on water or sets at the right hand of Jesus Christ

I was showing when he was, and I'd see him at the major shows (San Antonio and Houston were the ones I attended). I think the only thing he ever touched on the animal was a halter and a show stick.

Stuff like this is what is wrong with stock shows now, though I'm afraid that genie is already way out of the bottle.

I never showed animals, but I watched my first show this year. I was annoyed with how much our judge would not shut up about everything. Seemed like a thought stream exercise. He talked about himself half the time and the kids kept creepy eye contact with him the whole time. It was a different experience for sure.

And why the hell spook the animal with the stupid glitter bomb except for the jerk judge to show off how much power he has.

Gay or not gay the guy is a ******

You are concerned that the animal is being "spooked??" For your own emotional wellness, I highly encourage you to not research what is going to happen to that animal after it is sold at auction.

When they put a bolt through that animal's head it will be done with the animal restrained so it can't hurt anyone. A spooked 1,400 pound pile of mad in a ring with children can hurt someone. I've never been a fan of it; I much prefer shaking the exhibitor's hand.

It doesn't take a lot of brainpower to think that a several hundred pound animal getting spooked and storming off could result in injuries but somehow you managed to sneak under that low bar.
Bill Bigfoot
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think he's concerned about spooking the animal because a kid is holding the halter. Plus there are other animals and nowhere to run. Recipe for someone or something to get hurt
